I'm a former rider (age 40) who is looking for a small to medium displacement
dual sport on /off road bike to get back in the swing of things. My son (age
11) wants a dirt bike (probably an XR80 Honda or like) and I would like to be
able to go out on the trails with him. Anybody have any recommendations on
either of these two bikes (XT225 or DR200SE) ? I've looked over the Honda line
and apparently the only dual sport that they now make is the 650 model. That is
more bike than I feel that I need. Would greatly appreciate any info.

The DR200 is an evolution of the old SP200. I owned a 1987 SP200 and
had a blast on it. It isn't all that quick, but it is a suprisingly
good trail bike. The SP/DR has a front disk brake, rocker-type valve
adjusters, an oil filter, low seat height, decent suspension (for what
it is), and it is pretty reliable.

I'd go with the DR200.

I am an avid off road racer and dual sport rider. My dual sport is a DR 350
SE, that I would not trade for anything. My girlfriend rides an XT225, and it
is also a great bike. We looked at the DR 200 but found it to be to wide and
bulky. The XT 225 is a very good handling bike with a decent motor. I am 200
pounds and can still have fun on it. The XT would be the better choice, just
make sure that you don't think that your riding abilities would out grow it.
Take a good look at the DR350.

They don't make any street legal 2s in the US anymore.

One of the magazines did a comparo test between these two bikes when
they first came out. Niether was perfect, but the Yamaha was apparently
much superior to the Suzuki. The 200 has little power among other
problems. I've only ridden the XT225, and it was a bit tame, but ok for
slow riding.

I thought the little KDX 100cc 2-stroke was a dual sport and street legal.

Yup. The limit for street legal 2-strokes in the USA is 100cc.
In California the limit is 50cc.
