Hi all.

I'm wanting to get my first bike and am not to sure quite yet which one to get the Yamaha TT-R225 or the Honda XR200?

Can anyone give me the pros and cons I'd appreciate any feedback.

Thanks
Sheldon

I'm in the same boat Sheldon, all I know so far is that the Yamaha is
electric start, but the Honda seems to be a few hindred dollars more. The
thing that strikes me is that the TTR has much more fork rake than the
Honda, or for that matter any MX bike I've ever seen. Is this for handling
or to lower the stance?

Comments appreciated,

Scott

Thats your best choice in my opinion...
I have had a yamaha Moto4 "4 wheeler ATV" since '89
11 years later, I still have not had any problems with it!
That's a fact! Great durability, and reliability!

I have a 2000 TT-R225 and I love it. I did ride both the XR and the TT-R
before I bought. the TT-R is heavier, mine weighs in at 266 lbs. Basically
my decision was based on thee factors. (1) the TT-R has electric start. (2)
the TT-R's MSRP is $300.00 less the Honda. (3)Most important.... I like blue
more than red. I also found that for whatever reason the salesman was more
willing to negotiate with the Yamaha. The TT-R's MSRP is $2999.00 I got
mine for $2650.00 plus TTL of course. He would not budge on the XR.

Some differences I noticed when comparing the two bikes side by side.

The TT-R has about 1.5" more front suspension travel, but it has a little
less rear travel. The TT-R also has disc front brakes while the XR has
drum. The TT-R also has a little higher seat (about 1" higher). The TT-R
also holds about 1/2 gal. more gas. Oh and don't forget the 25 more cc's.
All of these differences are probably pretty minor. Both are great bikes.

I have been paced on my 225 at 73mph I do not know what the XR will do.

the e-start really helps out if you let the motor die heading up a steep
incline. Man it is nice to just push a button instead of trying to kick it
over when you find yourself in an awkward position.

All the current bike rags are comparing the two.
Pick up the issues & see what they have to say.
The short story is the Yamaha is winning. It's a
newer design.

Todd thanks for the post and the three reasons that you gave are the same
ones that I am leaning toward the Yamaha for.
I have ridden the XR200 and found it to be nice and light and smooth to ride
compared to the XR100 (friends bike) that I have kinda gotten used to
however I still have not ridden the Yamaha and would still like to, so I am
going to see if I can get a test ride at the dealer.

oh I have also now made a poll for every one to vote on their choice of bike
located at http://dirtbikes.sheldonsweb.com/

Please come and vote, although I think I already know which bike I'm going
to get.

Thanks Everyone.

So far I am in favor of the Yamaha.

Thanks

I want to jump back in here for a moment to ask why you're looking at
these particular bikes? To my mind, the only rational reason for looking
at a 200 (225) class bike is weight. In exchange for less power, you get
less weight, which can actually give you a better power to weight ratio,
and certainly more fun in the really tight stuff.

To be sure the Yamaha at least looks to be a more up-to-date design, and
Honda hasn't lifted a finger to improve the XR since '86, but that's
mainly because they haven't had any competition (hopefully they'll start
thinking about that now). But the Yamaha weighs FORTY POUNDS more! That
seems to me to negate any advantage of the smaller engine. If that
weight doesn't bother you, I'd suggest looking at the XR250, KLX300 or
even the TTR250. The XR and KLX have MUCH more power and suspension, and
weigh LESS than the 225! I think the TTR250 weighs more, but not a lot,
and it does have the magic button.

But again, maybe there's some other reason for looking at these bikes
(price? seat height?) that would keep you in this class, but if it's
weight, then go with the XR200 or move up to a 250.

Price is by far playing the biggest part in this however the seat height is
very comfortable and also the amount of power that the 200 class bikes have
is more than enough power for me especially when you weigh next to nothing
like I do and being so new to riding like I am, this class of bike would be
the best place for me to start, this will be my first bike.

So what am I doing now?? I'm looking to see if I can find someone hopefully
in the DFW area with an XR200 or a TT-R225 that they are wanting to sell at
a rather good price. Know of anyone??

Anyhow the Polls are still open at http://dirtbikes.sheldonsweb.com

Thanks

Sheldon, the TT-R225 has only been available in the US for a short time.
The XR has been available for a long
time.Find a nice older XR at fair market
value and ride the wheels off it! When
you tire of the 200,sell it for what you
paid for it,and move up.This is the best
plan in your situation.JMHO.

one in favor of honda is that there are millions of used ones out there.

Hi Sheldon,
I read all the posts so far, and it seemed that you might be a small
sized person. That would be the only reason that i would go for the
modern (post '95) XR200 or the XT225. I have riden them both, as well as
the older XR200, and here are my opinions. (You did ask.)

The XT225 is okay, IF you want something street legal to cruise lagally
back and forth to school. If you want a dirt bike to dodge trees and
bounce around off-road, it is a DOG! Look at the other post that pointed
out the extra rake for the front end of the XT. It is very slow steering
and not nimble at all. Even the little Chinese made Xing Fu 125cc and
150cc trail bikes are more fun in the woods. (at $1900 new.)

The '95 and later XR200 is shorter than the '87-'94 XR200 and not
nearly as serious an off road bike. They even swapped the front disk
brake for a drum. I would suggest this model if you are seriously
"height challenged".

If you are at least 5'5" tall, and want a serious play bike, I suggest
getting a good used XR200 from '87 to '94. It will dance in the tight
woods.

If money is not a problem, you might even consider a new 125 Husky or
KTM. If your size isn't a problem, I'd suggest a new XR250. It is a
seriously fun modern bike, while still being fairly small and light.
(just not as light as a two stroke.)

If money is a problem, and you are small of stature, you ought to look
for an older two stroke dirt bike of 125cc to 200cc to start on. It is
hard to beat an old DT 175 or DS 185 for being easy to live with.

In my humble opinion (IMHO), the only thing that the XT225 has going fo
it is the electric starter. I repeat, It is a DOG in the woods! (and not
a fast one either.)

There is a reason he wouldn't budge on the XR. He knows it's a better bike
and will have no trouble selling it at MSRP.
