clean out the carb, maybe it has a tiny chunk of spooge in it. Take it
all apart and be sure everything is clean.

Jason,

What year KLX 250 do you have ??? Do you have the stock carb??? What
elevation do you ride??? What type of riding do you do??? Need some more
info to help you out. I know the stock carb has a problem around idle,
some of the mags pointed out. I believe that Cycle Gear offers a carb
reflow for about $100 for your carb and Stroker & Cycle Gear offer a
Pumper Carb for about $300 with all the necessary cables and throttle
assemblies.

The factory did not get right on the 250, they had better success on the
300, but all the hop up shops say the pumper carb is the hot setup. The
pumper carb is on my wish list, due to the lack of bark off the bottom
end from the CV 34mm unit I have. There appears to be an inherent design
flaw with the CV carb, it is just "not" designed for enduro riding. I
would say for motocross, desert and perhaps hare scrambles the stocker
is fine, but for tree bashing, it appears the pumper carb is the hot
ticket.

Happy Trails !!! -MC-

Hmmm...I've got the same problem for 3 years now on my KLX and no thorough
cleaning of the carb, no experimenting with the various jets. no "expert"
tips whatsoever gave me a decent idle...

It seems that this is a typical KLX-problem...all I could do in the end was
turning the idle-screw up (like You did) so that the engine didn't die at
the slow-mo trails...this made Trial-like trails pure hell...

Hope that someone here knows the cure...and we promise to build him a
statue in the centre of his village...

I have a '95 and it is stock accept for a Thumper racing exhaust tip and
shorter kickstarter. I ride at sea level in Florida and I have access to a
fun loop track (jumps aren't very big cause they were built for trucks) and
good trails on private land. I had the original KLX back in '79 which had
the full Powroll 318cc kit. I got the KLX new a month a go as an interim
bike until my YZ400M shows up, so I really don't want to put much money
into it. I kind of like the way the CV carb runs really (useable, though
weak, power across entire rev range is why) and the only problems I have
with the KLX besides the idle is that it's a pain to start hot and the
suspension doesn't like to be really worked.

I'm sure the pumper carb would be great but all I want at this point is a
normal idle speed. Maybe there is a foreign object in the carb (foam?) that
is making it die,
as someone wrote me.

You may need to check your pilot jet. I picked up a used 1996 RM250 that
had the same problem. The carb had been re-jetted with a 38 pilot, stock
is 58. The bike was starving for gas on the bottom. You had to be close
to half throttle to keep the bike running, ran great from that point on.
Stuck in a 55, and she hummed.....
