I've got the tires pumped up, the rusty chain all cleaned
and lubed, air filter all washed and re-oiled, and basically
everything external back in pretty decent shape. The last
thing we need to know before trying to start it is (and here
comes the dumb question) is this thing a 2-stroke or
4-stroke? The cylinder/head assy looks too simple for a
4-stroke, but my son's friend isn't sure if they used to
just dump lawn mower gas into it or something else. There's
no info anywhere on the bike for fuel mixture or type. We
fired up my son's XR80 for him and he said it didn't sound
anything like that. Can someone confirm what this is, and
if it IS a 2-stroke, what the standard mix ratio should be?
Thanks, we'll be watching and hoping for a quick answer so
they can be riding this weekend!

You sure it's that old? I don't think they were pink and white back that
far. I think they were yellow. My neighbor has a pw50 from 1980 or 1981
and it's yellow. Crazy guess but I'd say that what you have there is a 92 -
95 vintage. I've got the 95 model. It has a pink seat, white plastic and
orange purple yellow stickers. Frame is gray and black.
Like Mr. Mallard said, its a two-stroke 100% for sure and the oil pumper is
on the right side, next to the carb, under the tank. The oil reservoir is
under the seat on the left side and should have a sight window for oil level
in the left side panel (you can't really see the oil level with it very
well)..
Simply put some new gas in the tank and make sure it has two-stroke oil in
the oil res. and you should be good to go. Don't use the old gas. It will
run like pucky for sure, if at all, with that in there.
Let us know what it is if you figure it out for sure. I'd be interested in
seeing what year it actually is. Take the VIN off the head tube and call
the Yamaha dealer. They'll let you know what year it is. Then you can get
a Clymer manual for it.

Yeah, I reckon its an early 90's, maybe 92-94. Our blue one is a '99
Our 88 PW 50 was pink and white.....narrowing down the time frame
Thanks to all that replied, especially the honorable Mr.
Mallard!
Now established it's a 2-stroke like I thought, with the oil
reservoir under the seat.
Have the seat, plastic and tank off no problem.
Problem now is it won't fire up!
I've got spark, gas, oil, carb has been cleaned out and all
jets, fuel inlet, etc... are clear.
Kicks over great but not even a hint at a pop.
I shot a little starting fluid into the cylinder and
reseated the plug and it fired the fluid right up! Buzzed
for about 1 second, but I don't want to keep doing that to a
2-stroke.
Any ideas now? Something in the oil injection? It was
running when they put it away 1.5 yrs ago.

You must drain the tank and empty the carb of ALL the old gas first.
Put in a new plug. Even tho' you see a spark, under pressure the old plug
may be failing.
Check the carb again, blow thru the jets, make sure the slide is moving
freely up and down.
Remove the exhaust, is it blocked by an insect nest or something?
PW80s need choke to start, make sure the choke is pulled out. (left side)
Alternatively, the choke may be stuck on, check it.
If it still won't start, try the starting fluid into the air filter box,
(should be at the front under the tank, remove filter before spraying)
If it still won't start, remove the plug and kick it lots with full
throttle, smell the head area - is petrol going thru? If it is it should run
with a new plug, kick lots with NO throttle to clear it before putting the
plug back in.
There are no disable devices other than run/off switch on the handlebars.
Don't worry about the oil pump, it will feed as required, no damage will be
done to the engine for lack of oil just by trying to start it.
I think it will go!
