knee pads vs knee brace

Hello all.
I am fairly new to motocross and I have a few questions. Which is better
(ie preferred) a knee brace or kneepad. I don't have knee problems but
don't want them either. I also would like to know how wearing either of
these devices affect boot comfort. I have a pair of fox formas. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

ironically, i have a knee brace on my left knee and a knee pad on the right. i
wear the brace because i had to have surgery a few years ago and dont care to
tweak it again.
the knee cup protects against hits you might take and prevents injury in that
manner but wont keep you from twisting it if you go down the way a knee brace
will.
i also have a brand new set of formas that i like alot and have no problem
with the combinations

What are some of the better brand knee braces? My right knee already
cracks like feeding bone through a mincing machine as it is.
