I've used Boyesen reeds in all my hillclimb bikes for the last 10 yrs
and have never had a set chip. I have heard of people chipping reeds but
have never had the problem myself. These bikes run at high RPM's so the
reeds are taking a fair amount of abuse. The only problem I've ever had
is the started to lift of the reed cage but this was after several years
of use.

Jeff,
The carbon fiber reeds help performance in the high range of the RPM
only. They hurt the performance down low a little bit. The reason is
that they are stiffer than fiberglass reeds, and therefore require more
pressure differential to open, thus hurting the low rpm condition. They
are stiffer so that they resist fluttering, or not closing properly at
high rpm, thus they help the high rpm condition some.

The Boyeson reeds are good quality. Go ahead and install them. Check
them for chipping and wear every time you take off the cylinder, or when
you feel the performance at the low end, especially, is beginning to
suffer. Fortunately, when the fiber reeds chip, they don't damage the
engine.

Got some in my RM, haven't logged enough time to tell you how they are yet
(too cold). Put some in my son's LEM 50, gee they got stollen... Can't
really tell you anything abou them other than they look trick and install
easy. :-)

Hope to have some opinion on them soon.

The new Carbon reeds will most likly chip at the edge like ALL carbon
reeds do.
just put them in and enjoy, then if you like the perfomance then get some
more when they do chip, ( they say that they chip due to over reving the
engine, but I have taken a set out right after break in and had them
chipped)
Personaly I like the RAD valve with the stock Boysen reeds, they work good
and last forever.

Dear Jeff,

It is true that carbon reeds will not last as long as fiberglass reeds.
That being said, Boyesen Pro Series reeds use a fiberglass bottom reed
and a carbon fiber top reed. The reason we use a fiberglass bottom reed
is to increase the life of the carbon reed. This combination still
allows you to reap the benefits of carbons' responsiveness.

When designing reeds we must try to balance to opposing factors; life
vs. performance. We can certainly make a reed that will last a very long
time, but it will not provide optimum performance. Our Power Reeds
(fiberglass based) are designed to provide the perfect balance between
life and performance. Our Pro Series Reeds are designed to provide
maximum performance. They will not have the same lifespan as traditional
fiberglass reeds.

A reed in an engine turning 8,000 rpm's opens and closes approx. 133
times a second. Think about that for a minute, and then think about how
many hours of riding you do. Like any other moving part in an engine, it
will fatigue over time. Many factors contribute to how long a reed will
last. If all you are doing is woods or trail riding, your reeds probably
will last a long time. If you are racing on a frequent basis and your
bike is heavily modified (e.g. porting) the reeds will not last as long.
Our general rule is this: check reeds on a yearly basis or every time
you service your top end. Visit our website for more info.

One last point. Put the reeds in your bike and have a good time. If you
are not satisfied, after trying the reeds, send them back to us for a
full refund.

Straight from the horses mouth. Cool.

I have been using carbon reeds (not Boy.) for a few years now and they
have been holding up great. I change them only once a year.

It has been my experience that they will fray at the ends only when
the jetting is lean. They held up fine when the jetting was correct.

Thanks for the info on the reeds. As soon as I get a leaner mainjet I'll
put them in.

Boyeson reeds have held up much better than stock ones in my 90 and 95
YZs. As to the performance, I'm not good enough to tell.

WOW!

While you're here...Did the 644 reeds for my 95 YZ250 change from 3
petals to 1, or were both of the packages I got mislabelled?

Dear Mike,

Yes the design for the YZ250's has changed from a 3-petal top reed to a
single petal top reed. If you take a closer look at the bottom reed, you
will see that it is also different.

The change waas made to increase life, reduce top end flutter, and
improve overall reed effeciency. It is our policy to constantly improve
reeds as we discover new design strategies.
