Just checking if anyone out there has tried getting parts from Austria?
I called up KTM USA to check whether if they had the part I wanted, a
Countershaft for my KTM and they said they didn't, and it would have to
be backordered (a couple of weeks).

anyone out there tried getting parts from Austria before? Damn, I don't
even know if I can communicate with them!

Not usually a problem. Unlike us, they study foreign languages and most of
the professional folks over there speak several, including English. Your
biggest issues will probably be customs, duty, and payment.

I'd think it would take longer than two weeks even if you can get them
to sell to you from there.

This may be a long shot, but try:

www.motosports-boise.com or 1-800-203-2353 (Tue - Sat) , ask for Bob.
Be sure to tell him I sent you, trying to build up as many brownie
points as possible before next spring......<G>

With KTMs, a few years back, that used to be the sentence handed down by the
central KTM parts palace. Scenario:

Me: "Uh, I need a waterpump impeller for my '85 500 MX?"
Parts guy: "Okay, I'll check.... shuffle shuffle shuffle... Hmmmm? Computer
says we have one.. someone must have taken it. Okay, let me call it in."
Speaker phone.... "Ya?" Parts guy: " I got a guy here looking for a water pump
impeller for a '85 500 MX...."
Guy on other end: "Ooooo... Is he sure he needs a new one?"

(Duh?!)

"because.... Thats... an ... "ORDER FROM AUSTRIA ITEM!"**

**From what I understand, this meant that the order was hand-delivered to a
cottage where an elderly couple would hand-cobble the part from raw materials
gathered inthe woods.

Sypathetic expression from parts guy... "I'll call you in about ten weeks."

Me: "I suppose the magnesium cover is going to be a problem too?"

I hear things have gotten better in the last decade or so.

I heard from my local dealer that everything was backed up due to Y2K having
the shipping industry tied up - everyone trying to build back up
inventories.

Just go here

http://www.ktm-racetech.com/

You'll get wwhat you need.

If not, try Moose Racing. There is nothing special about a c/s sprocket they
can be puchased from 6-8 diffferent manufacureres in the usa alone.

I think he is talking about the actual countershaft, not just a
sprocket.......

Well I live in Austria and we probably don't get parts any faster than
you. Now a days KTM has a pretty good spare parts management and even
if they would sell parts directly to you (normally they point you to
your local dealer or importer) 'backordered' means the same over here
as it does in the US: it takes time. I think you best bet would be in
checking several dealers in the US and try your luck!

Anecdote: I recently ordered a SX number plate to fit to my 99 300 EXC for
MX riding. I would imagine this wouldn't be a commonly stocked part. I was
"backordered" through the dealer, but came in about two weeks later. The
cost was pretty reasonable: $16.

So far (keeping my fingers crossed) everything I've needed has been
reasonably available and priced.

I agree , having owned several euro bikes it seems that only the pistons are
over priced all the other parts are virtually the same as the jap's . my best
friend owns a honda/suzuki dealer and i usually check with him to find out the
price on a simular jap part. I once needed a black box for my husky, it was
made by kokusan same as hondas the honda price was close to 200 and from husky
it was 67 dollars!
boy was my buddy suprised.
