I ride a WR 200 '94.
The DT/WR has been made (I think) from '91 or '92 right up to today, but in
some markets they call it the DT 200, and in others WR 200. In '98 it was
marketed in Australia as the WR 200, and it is STILL unchanged, apart from
bold new graphics.
Check Yamaha Australia for a picture of the bike. The transfers are now
blue and look somewhat like a YZ.
(my 20 member trail-bike club has 4 WR 200's)

I'm pretty sure we (as in Australia) had DT's as early as '89 if not
earlier. In '98, we still get the WR200 and the DT200. The DT is
basically the same model from the 80's aside from BNG. The WR is the
more trail aggressive bike, whereas the DT is the road/trail.
Any specific history, I'm afraid I'm of no use :)

I am from Canada and Have two DT's a 1995 DT200R and a 1987 DT200. The 95
DT200R (in Canada)and the WR200 in Canada share the same motor except the WR
has the autolube portions capped off and has a larger carb and different reed
cage. Also the magneto is different because the DT has a battery to operate
the servo operated powervalve(which the battery can be eliminated with a
capacitor) I am not sure about the gearing.Canada no longer imports these
bikes.I have seen the DT200 called by many names for many different bikes
.Brazil has the 98 dt200r which is the same as early 84-88 dt200 in
Canada. Some WR200's are called DT200WR.So it really depends what Country the
bike is from.
