If in Washington, I know nothing. If California near Kennedy Meadows,
the Nine-Mile-Canyon part (the east end going down to 395) is bare and
kind of interesting. When dragging the MC trailer and 3 bikes behind
the 68 Dodge van and going back down the tires started to slip (it was
dirt then -- maybe paved now). We unloaded two of the bikes and rode
the rest of the way down -- hubby got to drive. The rest of the road
is an ordinary mountain road.
The van hated dirt roads. One year we tried to do all of Highway 1, one
part of which was a steep dirt road on a hill. I was driving. When it
started slipping I made the family get out and opened the door so I
could jump if I had to. I didn't have to.
Mono Lake (up 395) is interesting. Take the little roads that go close
to the lake and walk the rest of the way. You'll be glad you did.
