I have a 1982 Yamaha IT250 and I was just curious what the energy
introduction box is supposed to do? There is a rubber hose running up to
a box from the intake boot near the carb and just was curious what this
box is there for and what it does? Anyone know?

It was called YEIS or Yamaha Energy Induction System. My understanding is
that it is designed to smooth out induction pulses caused by the reed valve
and piston opening and closing the port. It acts as a kind of reservoir of
air to absorb these pulses instead of upsetting the slide action in the
carb. This was the Yamaha explanation back in the early eighties anyway.
(Showing my age huh?) I owned Yamahas (havent admitted that one for a while)
with and without and I could not tell the difference, but that could be just
me!
Good luck

The effect of what Tony described is to make the carb adjustment/jetting
more accurate on the bottom end. I've never ridden mine without the YEIS on
it so I have no idea if it really makes much of a difference or not.

My '79 IT400 & my '81 IT 465 had no "boost bottle", but the '82 IT
465 (& my '83 IT490) did. I installed a boost bottle kit from FMF on
the '79 & later, the factory '82 system on the '81.

The boost bottle helped the bike to keep running, where it stalled
before the bottle was installed. Plus, it made it easier to bumpstart,
immediately after the engine stalled, before I actually quit rolling.

It also made the power snappier and carburetion cleaner, right off
idle. It did this by creating a plenum (sp?) for the fuel/air vapor
mixture to swirl around in, and more evenly mix together, aiding
combustion qualities of the mix.

It worked at low throttle and rpm situations. I could definitely
tell the difference. It also helped make the 465 easier to start. The
'81 IT465 was the 'hardest to kick the start lever' bike I've ever
had. Any help was appreciated. (The '82 IT 465 had a better internal
ratio on the kick start lever.)
The week after I bought it, it taught me to wear riding boots when
trying to start it. (I was wearing cowboy boots when it raped my right
shin.) I then had to start it with my left foot, while standing on
the right side. This came in handy, later, when I started riding
Huskys.
The week after a friend bought it from me, it backfired and threw
him over the bars, while he was starting it.

Don't you watch the news??? "IT" is not a Yamaha thing ... Dean Kaman has
developed "IT" as a revolutionary new personal transportation item ... and I
know nothing of hidrogren power.

s

PS ... "IT" looks like a scooter which they claim you cannot crash;-)

are they not to stop the engine bogging down when you land from a jump?
- I'm sure I read of that somewhere and it sounds like what you described

Thanks Tony for letting me know that. Very interesting? I'll have to
unhook it and plug off the hose and see what happens. Probably nothing
from what your describing. Anyway, thanks again for your reply!

Hey Jim,
Thanks for all the info on the YEIS system I posted. I was curious. I'm
trying to find out the year of my IT250. I think it's a 82 but not
really sure. I just got it from a friend of mine for $400 bucks. Here's
the serial number on the front of the frame,
4V5-021714. Just curious what the number on your IT465 is?
