Just went back to a YZ250 after 12 years of thumpers. I'm having a problem with
numb / tingling hands. I'm guessing it's because of the 2 stroke vibration.
No loose or cracked engine mounts or any other abnormal stuff. The bike has
Renthal bars Scott grips. Do you think different bars / grips might help? Any
recomendations?

Jim :

Relax your grip and change your hand position occasionally. Pro-tapers and TAG
bars flex more and absorb vibration. A steering damper lets you hold on looser.
Try different lever positions.

Nah. It's because now your riding a REAL bike and have to hang on. That never
was a problem on a 4 stroke. (Hehehehe! That oughta stir 'em up out there in
XRland).

Seriously though, if your bike has had the crank rebuilt, the builder may not
have got it aligned properly. You might try loosening, then tightening all the
engine mounts to the proper torque. And check the handlebar mounts. That's
about the only excuses I can think of. I guess 2-strokers do buzz a bit, but I
never think about it much...too busy hanging on!!!

No, no problems in XR land, but us YZ/WR400 boys are gettin' a bit hot under
the collar ;-)

Fill the bars with silicone caulk. It works wonders.
KX500 (no vibes at the bars)

I have Renthals on my bike and at first the vibes bothered me too. I
installed a set of Pro Grip dual sport grips(737's I think)...fatter than
usual but helped out alot. You have to get used to the thickness;I have
average sized hands and it always felt like it may be too hard to hold on but
never was. Pro Grip is the only manuf. I know that gives you size specs on
grips. I did the caulk/silicone in the bars trick also but didn't really
notice a change. I probably sealed it off before it set-up....I think?

You've gotten other reply's to this but my own recent experience indicates
that it could be as simple as your bars and what you have on them...

I put barkbusters on my stock WR400 crapsteel bars and immediately noticed
a new buzz in the right grip only that would numb my right hand. I have
since replaced the steel bars with Renthal's with the barkbusters and the
buzz is gone.

You could try moving some things around on your bars(clutch perch and
brake) and see if that helps. Do make sure all your engine mounts and other
major bolts are tight, anything loose in that area will cause excessive
vibration on the whole bike!

You can also use a product called a "Bar Snake" that will do the same thing but
better than filling the bars. Also, for more vibration reduction you could use the
bar ends from a street bike that are intended to damp vibration. I think that Kaw
used these ends on their Baja bikes for the long ride. If your bike has rubber
mounts for the bars make sure the rubber pieces are not worn out and are not
overtightened. You want vibration?, my 67' 360 Husky, now that's a vibrating mo-fo.
Modern bikes (even 500's ones) are really much smoother!

New bars will help...also try some of those soft gel grips.

Had the same problem on my WR. Early WR's had a very stiff fork.Which is
good for
MX. For enduro's , HScramles, etx. revalve or respring. It works.

An added benefit to filling the left side of the bar is that when you
crash on the left side and tear the grip, dirt can't make it through
the bar to interfere with the throttle movement.

Don't ask me how I know.

First, I thought that the bolts usually had a cotter pin in them so that you didn't
have to worry about them coming loose? My KTM does. I guess I would try to tighten them
so that I could just move them a little (very little) when I push real hard on the bars.
Without cotter pins I would locktight the nuts on too.

Don't the bolts have a shoulder for the washer to stop against? If so, it
shouldn't matter how hard you've tightened them. The rubber can't be compressed
too much.

No cotter pins on the KX but they do have a washer that the nut rubs against. I'll losen them
up a bit and locktite before my next ride. Thanks!
