Everyone says that the suspension sucks on the CR250's. Why? I just
got my front forks reworked and they seem fine. Granted I don't do
much motocross or track riding. I don't really jump either. I just
want to know why everyone says that. Also what do I do to my
suspension to make it better?

Honda has had bad suspension since 1987. Usually they have excessive rebound
damping and severe midstroke harshness and poor initial bump absorption along
with poor bottoming characteristics...truely poor suspension. Seeing as how
you don't really tax your suspension or demand much performance from what it
sounds, and just had them reworked, I'm sure they will be great. Don't worry
about throwing cash at them until you have a problem with them.

I don't know about other years but the '94 was an excellent year for
the CR for off road use. In someone famous' words, "the '93/4 CR is
the best off road chassis Honda ever produced." I don't know that as
a fact but I can tell you that with Factory Connection valving that
suspension *works.* I had 0.42's in the front and a 5.6 in the back,
pretty heavy for off-road but it held the bike high in the travel,
turned great, and you could plow into rocks at sick speeds and the
bike would just eat them. The last '94 I had had TiNitride on the
forks and shock shaft but I'm not sure how necessary that was. The
'94 I had that was stolen worked equally well without it. FC has the
'94 dialed, Kevin Hines spent a good amount of time with the bike
because it was one of the first years he was building the CRE here in
the states.

The '96 was a totally different beast. I poured insane amounts of
money into that suspension and never was totally happy in the rocks.
I had Race Tech stuff in there, Pro-Line, then two revalves with
Factory Connection. No soap. The only time I was happy was when the
forks were leaving a skim of oil on the sliders. The rear had a '95
shock piston and virtually no valving and it would still deflect
sideways off of everything in the trail. The Devol Link fixed that,
however. Apparently the '96 has a more SX linkage in it with a steep
rising leverage ratio. The Devol Link flattened that out and so when
hitting a log it would bury the wheel into the fender instead of
getting 6" into the travel and tightening up so bad it would take the
path of least resistance which was sideways. I actually liked the
stiffer chassis and swingarm when wicking across rock fields. With
the leaky forks I had my best finish ever, 3rd overall B. It was the
first time I actually didn't give a rat's ass what was on the ground,
I just held it WFO and pointed it where I wanted to go. I then had
the forks fixed with new seals and bushings and I almost DNF'd the
next race. The forks felt like they were bolted together and beat me
up so bad I sold the bike to my good friend and trail queen Dave a
week later. After selling the bike FC confessed the forks were
subject to huge amounts of stiction due to a poor bushing design.
Thanks guys, for the money I dumped I could have purchased Paoli's.

(Got my forks back from C-Cycle, stay tuned to Trail Rider for an
update, the "garage bounce" test shows some promise.)

I've got sTeVe's old 96 cr 250 and love it because its a pretty versitile
bike. True its not very good in the rocks but I dont race anymore either so
who cares!!..... If you are like me and just want to do some trail riding
and an occasional sand pit or moto you will love the bike!!! Good
power/reliable as all hell....forks are a bit harsh thats my only complaint
..... if I wanted to throw some more $$ at the bike I would go for .38
springs in the front...dont know if its gonna work but its worth a try!! BTW
do you know anyone with lighter springs for the '96???

For the record if you like the bike who cares if people say "the suspension
sucks" ride the wheels off the pig and have a ton of fun!!!

My 2 cents worth...

At the risk of sounding like the mutual admiration society I offer
this tid bit about my buddy and hero Dave Tlack. I just got off the
phone with his highness where he had related a story to me about
frozen pipes. Apparently the main feed to his house froze. Here in
the Joisey you are responsible for, in Dave's case, the 100 feet of
piping from the curb box to your house. Dave calls and snivels at the
Water Department who are naturally no help because that would mean
they'd have to put down their coffee cups and go out in the cold. So
Dave goes out and gets his Dad's Miller Gas Engined Welder and about
300' of leads. Hooks one end up to the cub box and the other up to
his house and cranks it up. The Miller is WFO and laboring hard
trying to crank 200 amps through what is essentially a dead short. An
hour later he has running water.

We're not worthy! We're not worthy! We're not worthy!

I retract the "putz" comment and hereby elevate you to the "go to"
man. I'd be filling my toilets with spackle buckets till March if
that were my house.
