Hi,
I am looking for a 125 now, and I came across a 97 RM125.
I did some reading, and it seems that 96 RM125 was a great bike, and
together with the yamaha was leading the category.
In 97 it has changed, the yamaha was better. Since then, yamaha stayed
at the front. Used Yamahas are hard to get here!

Does 97 RM125 has any disadvantage comparing to the 96 RM125?
I can get a 96 or 97 RM. I would naturally to to the newer one, but
since I lost the 97 125 shootout, I dont want to get a bike that is
newer but slower. Since I dont have that info, I tend to be on the safe
side and go for the 96 (older, but a winner!)
Appreciate any opinion.

See you in the mud :-)

I don't think the 97 is any slower really, just has really shitty rear
suspension and a little bit different power delivery. I have a 97 YZ125 and
have ridden the 96 RM125 and I can tell you that the YZ would absolutely KILL
the RM any day of the week. It has so much more power than anything of that
year it's unbelievable (i've ridden almost every 97, save Suzuki). The YZ
feels like a 250 and the rest feel like 80s...so a 96 isn't going to fare much
better against the latest YZs than the 97 is. Get whichever you like more, has
the most stuff with it, and is the best value for the money.

Most of those shootouts are pretty much BS anyway. Very little separates the top
three bikes in any class. You can race and win on any one of the major
manufacturers bikes. I would go for the one that's been abused the least,
maintained the best, has the fewest hours, and is basically in the best shape. If
you're unsure, ask the seller if you can have a mechanic take a look at the bike
and tell you what would need to be done to get it into top riding shape.
Good luck, and let us know which bike you end up with!

I have a 1996 RM125 and I love it! The suspenion is great, engine is VERY fast
(for me atleast) and it is easy mantainece. I bought mine with a FMF Fatty on
it so I dont know what it is stock if it is different at all.

I used to think that those shootouts were kinda BS until 97. I bought new 97
YZ125 because it was supposed to be the best. I loved it...great power,
suspension, and handling...then some guy was talking about how much better his
KX was...yet it finished last in all the shootouts. He was confident enough
that his bike was better that we swapped for a little bit...his KX was a slow
POS compared to the YZ, even he couldn't believe it. I also rode the 97 CR125,
no low end, pipey, hard to ride, crappy suspension, handled like shit...just
like what the magazines said. Same story again in 99...I bought a 99 YZ125
because I knew it would be good and eventually got to ride all the other 99s as
well. I worked at a Suzuki/Kawasaki dealership over the summer and got to do
some testing on new and used equipment...again the KX was a slow turd with
decent suspension and handling, the Suzuki was a screamer with decent front
suspension and shitty rear mated to a quick handling chassis...got a chance to
ride the 99 CR125 later...NO power whatsoever ANYWHERE (at least when compared
to earlier CRs and the Yamaha), REALLY shitty handling and crummy suspension.
Those magazines from what I can tell are usually right on the money when it
comes to testing those bikes. I'm not saying you have to have the bike that
won the shootout to win, but it definately makes it a LOT easier (and makes it
a helluva lot more fun to boot).
