hey all-

damn, it has been so long since I've been over here...

I've got an XT350 with a weaker-than-piss UFO 35/35w light on it, and
I really want to upgrade to a halogen. The one I just got offa ebay
was sold as a 12v 55/60w but I got it today: 35/35... :-/

so, anyone got a lead on a working example, any
color-just-so-long-as-it-works DOT-legal enduro HL?

To be truly DOT legal, it must have a glass lense. Acerbis and UFO make
them. Check out the Chaparral or Dennis Kirk catalog.

Why don't you just take the bulb itself out and replace it with a higher
wattage bulb? Most have H3 or H4 bulbs, just go to the auto parts store and
get a brighter one.

The stock Yamaha WR headlight has a glass lens and has a halogen bulb.
I *think* it is a 55/60 bulb.

Could be the weak (?) Yamaha lighting system will start frying
everything downstream all the way to the spokes.? I tried to do that
with my FZ600 and boiled a couple batteries and toasted two
stators...Duh!
Me and electrical stuff is like hairdryer in the bathub.

I guess if you went overboard it could be an issue, but he was only talking
about a 20/25 watt difference from what he wanted to what he got. You really
need to find out how much power the stator puts out and stay close to that.
Trying to go too far above the stator output will actually make the bulb
burn dimmer. Baja Designs makes a nice HID light that supposedly puts out
250 watts while consuming only 50 watts and it's only $450.

xenon is cheaper
a little bright at the same watts
stators usually can be beefed up
but not worth the hassle for the normal
person.

Where can I get a xeon bulb (not one of the fake ones the rice boys put on
their civics) for cheap. Stators are a different story. I rewound the one on
my XR650R, basically put in a second circuit for about $25 worth of stuff.
The new 125w circuit powers a 100w halogen bulb and the stock 75w circuit
powers the heated grips. Light and heat! I'll be needing it soon.

most autoparts stores should have some.
Although most xenon bulbs have that dang
blue dye on them. (i wonder if paint stripper
would take the dye off)
www.jcwhitney.com sells them also

I don't know about Yamahas, but I replaced the stock 35/35 watt bulb of my
Honda dual sport bike for a 60/65w car bulb.
It was in 99 and the bulb is still there, no problems with charging system
or batteries so far!

The bike is a little 200cc four stroke single.

My streetbike had dual headlights and I didn't bump up that high
before things got squirrley.
Maybe I should NOT have put the bitchin' kewl squid smoked headlight
cover on them...

There's my bike, practically, the lower plastic breaks first and
easily: http://bike-exchange.com/side.jpg

In my case that would imply careful thought and not being an ignoramus
-- that's hard when it comes to electrons: more fun stuff and it
could have been me:

That would be the tits! Stick that on the Statue of Liberty and say,

Couple of thoughts: Do you have an AC lighting circuit? If so it's
probably a constant current design and you can't up the watts much.
My '86 tlr200 had a 35/35 watt Stanley and can't power anything over
45/45 which I use now.

Aftermarket reflectors are easy to get; Chaparral sells them, Aardvark
International sells E-code (much better!) http://www.talbotco.com/
Daniel Stern Lighting has a good website too: http://lighting.mbz.org/

If your existing headlight is like the one on the tlr200 best thing
to do is apply a hammer to the glass, saw out the bulb and use the
remains to form a bracket which fits the bike. Then you can improvise
a mount for either a good light or a simple $6 Sylvania halogen sealed
beam, which for the money is a huge improvement over stock.

A *true* xenon bulb is in the HID (high intensity discharge- almost
sounds painful) family. There is no filament. it uses basically a
welding arc for light. This requires an ignitor as well as the correct
bulb. The cheapest I've seen a true xenon bulb is $80. You cannot
switch to that type system by just swapping bulbs.

the headlight lense/reflector only accepts the wimpy push/turn bulb
that sits in it now: the reflector doesn't have the means to secure
the tabs characteristic of H3/H4 bulbs...now if I could find a
rectangular headlight assy to fit in the plastic shroud I'd be set,
but as with all weird-size proprietory bits.....

I have done this with my XR, now I have a H3 bulb instead of the push/turn
POS. This can be summed up in two words - Walmart, improvise.

I think you're spending waaay too much time on this. I found a brand new
Baja designs halogen headlight assembly on Ebay for $20 a while ago. It
came with a much stringer lamp than the stock RXC setup.

Keep looking.

so YOU bought it! Damn you!! ;-)

Yeah, I'm trying to avoid the 'jam something in there and tape it
down/call it good' fix on this. Got a line on some potential parts in
a friend's garage: we'll see what comes of that this weekend (If i
don't mind KTM orange, anyway).

although if I could see how much actual light a Acerbis DHH spills, I
know where I can get a solid-but-ugly example from an old roomate back
east....
