I just got a 96 CR-250 & after comparing it to a few other
91 & 92 250s, it just seems like a 500 in terms of sheer
output power. Is this normal for the 96 year ?

Yep, excellent power in that baby. Got a buddy that refuses to part with
his he likes it so much. I've ridden it, very stout motor!

I understand where your coming from, however, comparing a stout 250 to a
CR500 is like comparing a mini-bike to a big-wheel 80. Next time your on a
late model CR500, ring it out on the pipe thru all 5 gears (get on the pipe
and ride it like a 250), then take a look at your shorts and tell me again
how your 250 is like a 500...don't think so. Take it from a open class
rider. Then again maybe I'm not being totally fair since a stock 500 is
around 60+ horsepower and a race prepared bike can yield as much as 85
horsepower. Big difference...

Well said abyssal, stop dreaming 250 guys there is NO COMPARISON to a 500 in
the way they ride, don't let paper HP figures confuse you its the TORQUE !!!

Comparing 01 CR250 to 01 CR500, the 500 has 48% more torque at 6000rpm than
the 250 has at 8000rpm !!!

Try tying two 01 CR250's together, then you'll be getting the idea.....

seriously dude, get out there and try one, you won't be making stupid posts
like that one again...

Thanks Bob, what is it with these 250 guys. I mean, I like 250s, but I
LOVE the raw power of a 500!!! Im only 5'8" and 180 lbs dressed out which
makes it even all the better. And the best part is letting a big mouth 250
rider try shooting a burm for the first time with my bike...they blow out
the top everytime...funny as hell, even when you warn them to keep the r's
down...they just don't believe you until they until they try it. And even
better is jumping on their 250 and throwing it around like a bicycle...that
leaves them with their jaws dropped. And how about when they come up short
the first time they try to jump it, then the next time around they overshoot
it by about 30 yards...that gets me everytime. As I always say, "if you
come up short on a 500, you better check the wiring between your brain and
your wrist".

Once an open rider, always an open rider!!!

Oh, and I almost forgot...how many times did you have to start your bike for
someone BEFORE they ware themselves out trying to start it or BEFORE they
get thrown off...that kills me...

what bike is used for all those world record jumps? Robbie Knievel - CR500,
Seth Enslow - CR500, 245ft.

check out some of the dune sequences in the later crusty movies, you'll see
CR500's BLAST up the dunes and sail 150ft over the top...

check out one of the later Terrafirma movies showing super-motard racing, a

Define "race prepared". Do you mean the normal
"ported, new pipe, head reworked, high-flow reed cage, etc.." stuff ???
That'll give you 25 more horsepower?? Or are you referring to
the famous Eric Gore CR550 bike?

In either case, I'm curious if the power is added throughout
the entire rev range, or does it turn into totally unmanageable
light-switch type power ????

Robbie Knievel? Seth Enslow? Now there are a couple of real men. At least
Robbie looks like a color coordinator with that outfit he wears.

I would not expect more from a person who preaches about telling his son
before he races 'I want you to go out there and race as fast as you can, NOT
AS FAST AS YOU THINK YOU CAN' and in the very next line call a kid a loser
for not clearing a 60 foot table top...see( www.tolancr80.com) Put it in

Oh, could you clear that jump? I know I could. I don't think your a loser
if you can't or won't try cause you know you would come up short on your
power house.

Race prepared as in a HRC bike. My '93 CR500 was a 500 Nationals bike that
I purchased from a factory rider (it was one of his backup bikes). The rear
wheel dynoed at 83.24 hp. Titanium clutch basket, carbon fiber plates,
polished counterweights, polished and shot-peened rod, special HRC racing
piston, special HRC cylinder port mods, barrel matching, special carbon
fiber reeds and intake, gusseted frame, special shock and fork valving,
machine triple clamps, etc., etc. The power was smooth and controllable
throughout the rpm range with a slight midrange hit, then...oh my god. The
torque was enough for short approach 3rd gear launches on 60ft table tops
without a problem. Woops are no problem either since a little weight shift
and a little twist of the wrist, and the front end wouldnt even skim the
tops on long runs. There are a few special riding styles to use with a
500...1st never use a low gear thru a burm, but rather, come in hard and
coast it or upshift and torque it thru, otherwise the gyroscopic effect of
that big crank will straiten up the bike and YOU Will blow over the top (the
guy behind you will really be pissed because you just rearranged the burm
before he got there), and 2nd, be careful how you adjust your attitude in
the air on long jumps because you have a much bigger tire than a 250 and ANY
sudden stop, with the center of gravity on the 500, will cause changes in
pitch VERY rapidly. Easy on the break and throttle...and if you intend on
whipping it, just bring blip the throttle and that gyroscope will right
itself.

Those are nice figures, but it's too bad in the real world, on most
tracks, faster lap times are turned by 250's (and sometimes 125's), even
with their "puny" motors.

Kind of like the 1970 El Camino 454SS with the LS6 package. Really
mean, tons-o-power, but too bad you can only utilize about 1/4 of it.

Kudos' to you and Tolan. I sure love to see people having fun , and
enjoying such a great sport like Motocross... But don't get too big of an
Ego about CR500's haha.. your son is out jumping you with an 80!! If you
want more stats about how a 500 is not always the fastest bike (even on a
fast open track ) ask Eric Gebores, and George Jobe about getting passed by
a 125 at the 1986 motocross Des Nations. ( Johnny Omara on an HRC prepped
CR125 passing an HRC RC500 at the 86 Des nations) or.. Bob Hannah on a
pre-production 1988 RM125 in the mud at the 1987 Motocross Des Nations.
There is a limit to the usefulness of horsepower on a track.. Jumping

you have summarised the 500 well, and I agree 100% with what you say...
if we go back to the very beginning, the original poster claimed a CR250 was
almost the equal (power wise) of the CR500..I seriously disputed that as did
many others that have ridden both...

for the record I have NEVER said the CR500 was a great motocrosser, On the
track I get whupped by nearly everything (after the holeshot of course!)
from YZFs to A grade 80's.....and those little buggers laugh as they go
past.....

My CR500 is great for ME! i'm 40, overweight, will never race competitively
again, but do enjoy the sheer exhilaration that ONLY the 500 engine can give
me....I enjoy the look in my Sons 12yo friends eyes when he tells them,
"Yeah, Dad rides a CR500". For me it's a legend, maybe even a
classic....it'll never be last years YZF400 to this years YZF426...Time will
stand still for the CR500, and we can age gracefully together...

Very true... Horsepower wise the CR500 is king ( ok.. maybe the new Husky
570 will top it.. but...) I scared myself silly every time I rode my dads..
It is truly a unique experience.. I hope Tolan and you have great rides
together.. there is no better family sport.. And I did miss the original
post.. I think if I'm right a CR250 posts mid 40's and a CR500 is in the
high 50's to low 60's for horsepower? Sound like the original post was a
little off if someone was saying a CR250 equaled a 500. It's an amazing
engine ( kind of says something when Honda has progressively been taming it
down since it's debut in 1985 in an effort to make it rideable and more moto
effective) for Sand, flat out speed, frightening 5th gear wheelies, and
rearranging mother earth there is really no equal, but man.. I'm going to
stick to big thumpers and middleweight strokes ;-) I feel safer!! haha
Have a great one..

I was refering to ragging your kid for not clearing a jump but using the
typical mini dad excuse of "well, I'm the bread winner now and...balh,
blah, blah". I can't tell you how many times I've seen some fat slob of

Darn, I was hoping you'd sleep in the 'Bike Shed' when I come to visit.

Cewl, isn't there a July/August Idaho Spodefest in the planning stage.
Ship Gail and Kids back home and spend a extra week with Djones

I don't know bob but from what I see on his page and his posts here I don't
think he grabs Tolan and swears at him for not making jumps I remember
reading that the same day Bob bought Tolan new gear he crashed and scratched
it all up and got it dirty there is a picture of him afterwards - dirty and
embarrassed but NOT crying, if bob was that kind of parent that's swears at
a kid for not making a jump imagine what the parent would do if the kid
screwed up his new gear on its first ride! So although I can't be sure I

Ahh, I was curious how it was going. I haven't ridden the KX for a nearly 6
weeks due to the back injury so I guess I should give it a fresh tank before
I go out again. The back held up to a weekend of surfing just gone so I
think I'll gibe it a go on the KX this weekend. Amber's interest in the JR50
is surfacing again so I'll play it cool and see if she want's to come along.

thanks for the support RM250 !

As a matter of fact I don't take anything out on the kids, I'm pretty much
there to finance it all and provide the odd advice if asked....The only time
Tolan and I have really disagreed over MX was when he wanted to race sick
and I wouldn't let him do it, but in a few days even he saw there was a
reason for that...

No I don't personally attack the 'DRN Trilogy', I only attack their posts!

Feel free to ask Ivan or Tuna if they think I attack them personally, the
odd time they have indicated they were offended I have apologised
immediately, and resumed my attack from a different angle...

Ivan I count as a good bloke, Rich I have always respected enormously for
his technical knowledge, and Tuna, well Tuna and I are different but I also
respect his work and certainly have NO personal grievances against him!

If you are referring to the 'stoushes we have here on RMD be aware that you

the background may surprise you....

Around a year ago i bought a really sweet 95 CR250 that had really been
well maintained. Not lightly used or anything, but the previous owner made it
a point not to trash it and take really good care of it. The engine is
incredible stock from what i heard, but he went ahead and modified it some. The
engine is now a monster, full on acceleration in hard pack surfaces yields
wheelies no matter how far up you sit, and as long as you have the revs above,
say 4000 you have enough power for anything. Before selling it to me he bought
a 99 or 00 RM and when he went riding, the CR was his first choice. The bike
is super fast, and i think that the 95-96 CR has a pretty loyal contingent of
peolple who still ride them.

anyone ever heard of the 7 drunken sailors (it may be 5) - its a drink they
sell in Spain you get 7 (or 5) shots of this crap and if you quickly drink
them all and can walk away you get it free!

of course a certain member of my family tried this drink out (he was sober
at the time) drank them all said ' there see, the Spanish are wimps!' took 2
steps from the bar and collapsed - out cold the rest of the night - now that
sounds like a drink!

shit I forgot to mention that bit, he didn't he was passed out my dad took
his wallet paid for the drink and bought a few round with his money because
he was such an idiot, it was probably a combination of gas, brake fluid,
vodka, rum and dog piss!

actually sound quite interesting I always thought from experience that
through the mouth stuff doesn't reach your blood too quickly - i.e. when
someone dared me to drink a bottle of vodka in 40 seconds a while back of
course I like a challenge ,and to be the centre of attention, so I drank
about 3/4 of it then decided it was too horrible to drink was still
completely sober for the next 10/15 mins then I gradually lost the use of my
legs and speech went to hell, started BS'ing with people I didn't know
(didn't happen in that order though), and I woke up the next day the rest of
the night just isn't in my head but it went down in the history books as a
lesson well learned!

Sounds like my first time with the Bottle. Three of us 14yo's managed to
liberate
a fifth or quart of vodka. We passed and chugged it between us, non stop
until it was gone. We all jumped on our bicycles and made it about twenty
feet before we crashed in a ditch, passed out, stone cold drunk, dead to the
world. Somehow our parents found us laying in the ditch, dragged us home.
I don't remember a thing until the following day, woke up in the bathtub,
covered with puke. Mom thought it was funny, Dad got the belt out. It's been all
down hill, from then on.

which is exactly why my four are going to have their first big binge at

That way at least I can make sure they are relatively safe , apart from the

Oh yeah, "THE BELT." Did he do that impressive "belt snapping" noise first?

My dad would have made a good host at the Inquisition with the show
accompanying THE BELT. He even smashed through a door once to get us when my

what age I wonder? probably earlier than alcohol, maybe 11?

How could you blow the cover, Jeff!

After all the efforts of timing the encounter, making sure it looks
real to the wittnessing Keith, Kevin and Wes, sacrificing almost every
lever of Wes' YZ in the process!

what a waste

I went to Daytona and had a blast.

Some pics of the vacation. I just threw it together so it takes a while to
load.

I'm the guy on the blue thumper :)

coll photo's, real 'vacation' feel to it....coupla guys on bikes having fun
on a deserted track, then off to the supercross to see how it's really done,
and mingle with the stars...

nope, loaded really quick (20-30 seconds)

>

yeah the one without numbers really close to the ground.....

Here's my questions:
1. Half way down there is a YZ waaay up over the triple, but it doesn't look
like he's gonna make the landing....who is it and did he land it OK?
2. There are no captions so it's hard to follow what's going on, who is the
guy in lots of photos at the beginning on the white YZ, and who is the lady
with mac? (also in the last few photos)

That was exactly how it was. It was one of the best vacations of my life.
The guys I rode with were guys I grew up with and didn't have to worry about
anything. We just had a good time.

> > I'm the guy on the blue thumper :)

Yep. But it was fun anyway. Believe it or not those are the largest jumps
I have ever done. I sailed far just not high. I think the farthest I went
was when I cleared the 35foot table top. I just didn't go higher then 2
feet above the jump.

> Here's my questions:

#28? That was Nathan Ramsey and he made it every time. He just hit the
back brake and it nosed down for a perfect landing. He was the only one
consistently doing the triple in the 125 race.

That is my friend Sean on the white bike. I grew up with him. The guy in
the MSR gear without a helmet is my other friend Brantley who grew up with
us. He is 2 years younger then Sean and I but a really good guy. He
doesn't have a bike but borrowed a CR250 on Sunday and now he is out to buy
3. One for him and one for each kid. The wife thinks he's nuts but she
will get to have more fun on the boat now.

>and who is the lady

That is my wife. She is my best friend.

same here, my absolute limit is 40', which means I can only do about a third
of the jumps on your average MX track....Jumping wise that puts me in the
bottom half of the 80cc B grade at our club....(The A 80's easily clear 90'
tabletops and 60' doubles, brake taps and all...)
