Jason,
your question about sprockets really isn't that tough. Keep your front
sprokect and think about a 50 tooth for the rear for general all-around
racing. Generally, you want a large rear sprocket for tight tracks, sand,
or anything requiring good power (larger rear = power & acceleration).
For open tracks with fast straights or anything where speed is important,
use a smaller rear sprocket, say 48 teeth. (smaller rear = speed, less
acceleration).
Your bike sounds strong, I'd stick with a 50T or 49T and get used to it
on tracks before swapping sprockets for each track. A buddy of mine with
a '91CR has a 48T and he NEVER complains about not having enough speed or
power. Good luck on your venture into MX, you'll have a lot of fun.

One thing to be careful of when switching sprockets by more than one or two
teeth. Your chain may be too short/long when you change sprocket sizes.
This is especially frustrating to find out late at night when you were
planning to race the next day.
