I started using Maxima MTL 80W the last 3 trans oil changes. Was using
Belray 80w. I can't see where that would matter but who knows. I
change it often. Too often probably.
Interesting. Does it happen if you shift the bike into 3rd and then
back to 2nd? I would simply pull the clutch basket and check out the
shifting mechanism to ensure that the drum it rotates enough to lock
into 2nd gear.
You can't change the gear oil too often, but it's much less expensive
using non-motorcycle branded oils. I have been using Hona brand ATF
that was given to me in my 2-strokes. I will switch to whatever is on
sale at Wally World when I need more.

That's exactly what I did on the 2nd moto when it slipped back to
neutral. I shifted it up to 3rd with my hand then back to 2nd.

I am going to pull the clutch out of tonight and put a new boss (inner
basket) in it. It was getting slightly grooved when I put the Hinson
outer basket in a couple weeks ago. I will check it out

Yeah and I always used the cheap(er) stuff in mine but I just can't
bring myself to do it on his race bikes. If he had a trans failure
over the jumps they put on tracks nowadays I would be second guessing
myself. I know, waste of money. But hell someone has to buy it.
Thanks Mike

I'm sure you'll figure it out. My 2000 GasGas decided not to shift
one day. I very small sliver of metal was keeping two plates from
sliding against each other. All I needed was to clean the parts and
new case gasket.
Good luck!

Dear Mike,
on my vintage streetbikes i had a (m8 or so) bolt with a slotted end stick
out behind the gearshifter, it was secured with a selflocking nut.
On the other end of the bolt (inside the gearbox) was an "offcenter peg"
that aligned the gearshifterreturnspring with its correct position.
When misaligned (or when the is broken/out of its seat) , one was unable to
flick through the gears without manually (footually??) returning the
gearshifter to its correct restingposition after every gearchange.
Also, because the returnspring was pushing the gearshifter slightly out of
its restingposition, the gearbox would spontaneously shift to "in between
gears" on bumpy roads or when performing
acceleration-deceleration-acceleration.
Oh by the way...if the little spring that pushes a pin on the indexingddisc
of your geardrum is broken you get gearshift probs too....the abillity to
shift 3 gears in one move AND spontaneous gearchange.
Some bikes are slightly picky for the exact weight of oil...stick to what
has always worked for you in this bike.
Goodluck wrenching on the champ's bike, i hope this oldschool ranting helped
a bit.
Grtz, P1.
Make sure the shift "spider" from the (pedal) shift shaft is engaging
properly at the shift drum.
Also, if it goes that far, look for either a bent shift fork, or wear
on the pivot points of the shift fork and wear of the shift fork's
"arms". With Brandon's GasGas XC200, it was the pivot points of the
shift forks, where they attach to the shift drum.
Good Wrenching to you!

Enjoy every minute of it we can afford. He's raced for 6 or 7 years
now. He's 12 (13 in August) and I don't have many years left with him.
What I mean by that is, cars, girls, jobs, etc.
I used to read this group 4 or 5 yrs ago on a regular basis. I even
bought a few things from Jim back then. lol I still read it once a
month or so. Each of you that replied were here then. Good to see old
newsgroups stay together with all the new web based forums out there.
Excellent resource with great people.
Thanks for the business, too.
Jim

Great news. It's usually something simple.
