Can't help you on the article search, but the same thing happened
to me recently... Someone asked me "How do you stay so fit?" When
I responded, "Well I ride my motorcycle..." they were puzzled.
"You mean you stay fit by merely rotating that throttle thingy?"
"Amazing, isn't it?" I quipped.

Well, my mind's pretty rusty on this one, but you might check with
anyone you know that has a ton of MXA issues. I seem to remember them
doing a rather large article on it back in....hmmm...... I'd say
somewhere in the reign of RJ. I believe they quoted the study that puts
motocrossers right at the top of the fitness list, but I don't remember
who did the study or where. Seems like the only sport which was as
physically demanding (or more) as motocross was soccer. They tested
athletes from several sports, and the top ones seemed to be motocrossers
and cross-country runners. The major thing you need to remember about
our sport is the fact that (studies or not) it is by far the most
demanding sport out there. Just think - not only are you beating the
hell out of your body lap after lap, but you're working your mind the
entire time as well. I don't know of many other sports that can claim
the same thing. Mountain bike racing comes to mind.... and
also....hmmm.... Pretty short list, it looks like.

Check out MotoPlex... go to the News Stand and read 'Motocross Info.'
Look for the heading "The World of Motocross"
Here you will find an article regarding the fitness of Motocrossers.
The article was sent to me by Mike Kidd Promotions, and was written
either by them or some other MXers, but the facts contained are straight
out of a study conducted by the National Athletic Health Institute
(NAHI). It is very interesting and something to impress every non-MXer
you run into!!

Bob,
Just find an extra bike. Take Horse Laugher out for a short 70 mile
trail ride. ;)

Hmmm, don't race enduro's do you Mark? Ever tried, "Ok, my odo says,

You talking to me Ken? I believe you've got yer attribution a bit mixed
up. That wasn't me. Besides, everyone knows I'm merely a MX weenie,
you know, always wadding meself up senselessly. Everyone laughed at me
when I showed up to my first enduro with my HP43 ducted-taped to the bars.

So, Merf, does this mean that there is something that differentiates you
from the rest of us........do you have a 80 toes and fingers? Just curious
as to what makes numbers beyond "80" require math skills. :) LOL

Well Ken, first off you got the wrong guy. I'm the one who wrote what
you quoted. And to paraphrase what you said, *I* didn't mean to belittle
enduro racing. I know what enduros are like since my Dad raced them when
I was little (on a Can Am no less) Why do you think I picked motocross?
:) Basically when I wrote what I did, I was thinking of all off-road
motorcycling in general. Since MX was the topic of the subject, that was
what I went with. By "other sports" I meant "Other activities not
involving motorcycles". I'm sure road racers could hound me on the same
thing, what with all that tight leather they wear and stuff ;)

In any case, I wasn't trying to 'offend' anyone, just pointing out that
to race enduro's you need math skills while racing a motoX. ;)
Tis all.

I must not be reading my own stuff correctly. Let me try to clarify. After
you have ridden 80 miles, in an enduro, you still need to be able to have
adequate math skills to do long division, if you don't have a computer.
Example: Speed avg is 24mph (.4 mpm). Odo reads 90.3 Jart sez 94.9.
((94.9 - 90.3) / .4 = x ) x = how far ahead/behind you are.

Pefect description of riding an enduro except I have 2 problems with it.
First, after the about 50 miles I don't bother with the roll chart, I'M
LATE. Second, math skills at 80 miles, hell, I'm using survival skills at
80 miles. I take that back, I do use the roll chart at 80 miles to see how
many miles I have until my first beer!!!. Part of that survival thing :-)

You are a glutton for punishment, that stairmaster is a killer ! To be
serious. . . I try to ride my mountain bike 2-3 times a week. Good for the
legs and lungs, also helps keep reactions sharp and develops good line
selection.
For my arms, I use a 10lb weight on a 4ft. rope with the other end through
a 1in wooden dowel rod (or broomhandle). Hold the handle at shoulder level
(elbows locked) and twist the handle to roll up the weight on the rope.
Then, (slowly) roll the weight back down. This helps my hands, wrists, and
forearms. While doing this I try to convert miles to minutes for each
speed average (15mph, 18mph, 24mph) in my head. If I'm feeling really
sharp I'll calculate compound interest rates for my next dirt bike
purchase. This keeps my mental math skills sharp for loooooooong enduros.

Buy her a bike! My wife said she thought it looked like fun. She
started racing, kicked butt, but commented that it is the toughest
thing she's ever done. ;)
