I'm trying to figure out what model year my CR125R is. I have the serial
number (frame and motor), but the plate that's normally attached to the
steering head has been removed by some idiot previous owner who repainted
the frame.
It looks like a '91 but I want to be sure before I start ordering parts.
On the frame it says HM X JE01-5102346 X
Engine Type : JE01E Serial: 5104611
Your help would save me some hard earned dough. If there's a site that would
help me out with this that would be great too!
Thanks

Call Midwest Action Cycle at 800-343-9065 and they'll tell you the year by
frame numbers. They also have reasonable prices on OEM and aftermarket stuff.
They have ads in all the Dirt Bike rags

Thanks for the info 'Atious'. I will give MAC a shot. When I started
restoring my '74 Datsun 260Z the restoration 'manual' explained that you
could tell by the serial number when the car was made, which model it was,
size engine and of course the serial number of the car itself. I was hoping
that there was a similar logic to Honda's seial numbers.
Thanks again

Marc

What is the tenth digit of the V.I.N.#? You can find this number on your
registration card or title.

Graves, I wish I knew. The country where I live does not require
registration cards nor titles for off-road motorcycles. They are not
street-legal anyway and therefor they are not considered as a 'real'
vehicle. There are no emissions, noise regulations or any of that (not even
for street-legal cars/motorcycles). Fine and dandy I guess, but this bike
has been through several owners and in the process its 'identity' has been
lost. Are you aware of any specific specifications or parts whereby I could
identify a '91? I noticed that the carb has a number on it (PJ15A ADI). Is
this a helpful indicator?
One more question. Are the motors of a '90 and a '91 identical? would the
cylinder of a '90 fit on the tranny of a '91?

Thanks for the help.

Marc

My parts book references 1988 to 1991 as the same part number for the cylinder.

Ok, I was just looking through my service manual and now I'm really
confused. The type on the carb makes it a '90, but all the plastics and the
seat make it a '91. I'll just assume that it's a '91 and that someone
swapped the carb. Especially since you say that the part number for the
cylinder is identical.
Thanks for your help Atious.

One more question. Where can I get a 'parts book reference'?

Those numbers may be enough to get the year of the bike from the dealer, who is
just a phone call away from being able to help you. I don't know of a site that
deals with this. I would just call my local dealer. They are usually glad to
help out.

No, I think he omitted a couple numbers. It should have a 17 digit
serial number on the steering head. The 10th digit indicates the year.
a '90 model would be an "L", a '91 would be an "M".

Some manufacturers don't put 17 digit VIN's on bikes sold outside of the
USA. None of my jap bikes have had 17 digit serial number.

Got mine from my local honda dealer and I also use a Tucker-Rocky catalog. You
can also call Midwest Action Cycle and they'll tell you what years a certain
part will fit. I've been ordering my Honda stuff from them for 6 years. A very
helpful crew with only one guy that has ever given me a hard time. After six
monthes of ordering all my shipments went to second day shipping free of
charge. After two years, all my stuff since has been shipped next day free
shipping.
Not a plug, just good business
