KTM stand for "Kronreif-Trunkenpolz Mattighofen"
like some of the other already wrote, Mattighofen is the city where the
manufactory is (KTM's are still handmade and not from robots like the
japanese bikes!!!One of the reason you pay so much more) and the other two
are names, the founder: Hans Trunkenpolz from Mattighofen built KTM
("Kronreif-Trunkenpolz Mattighofen") and Kronreif I do not know right now!
Sorry. In 1989 the company GIT Trust Holding with Josef Taus and Manfred
Leeb had the most Stockshares form KTM.In 1991 they had about 1 Billion
Austrian Schilling deficit and where colse before bankrupsy (They still
went bankruped). A guy named Stefan Pierer now the head of KTM split all
the KTM parts and sold most of them (like KTM bisicles to an Austrian
bisicle company from Salzburg, coolingmachines to a Itaien company and
cross-holding etc.)A lawer Erich Chalupsky who helped the bootcompany
Koflach back on track and Eternit-Hatschek bought the motocycle group. And
more mony came from Swiss Financiers.
Thats it, that shoud answer some of your questions. Oh one other thing
Kronreif means in German Crown-bracelet and Trunkenpolz is something like
drunkhead, thats one reason why you will not find anything on KTMs own
Homepage.
(but why is the RXC about $2000,- cheaper in the USA than the EGS in
Austria/Germany, who the hell knows?)
I do like "Kick Ten Minutes", been there done that!
have fun riding................

Actually in the US the KTM's are not that much more expensive than the
"others" anymore- probably due to exchange rates.

Thanks for the brief history of KTM

I love it mine is a '96 and no problems so far, exept Kick Ten Minutes
when crashed in very hot wheater.
Otherwise, I would by a KTM anytime again.
I hope to get a used 2 stroke for more jumping.
The 4-stroke is a litlebit on the heavy side, even there is power.
