I spent this last weekend attending Gary Bailey's two day motocross school. It
was held at Lake Whitney Cycle Ranch Whitney, Texas. I learned quite a bit
and find that it's very hard to fix my bad habits in just two days. The school
is geared more towards the serious racer in my opinion. I would say my biggest
problem is that I do not keep my elbows up. Bailey preaches smooth clutch
action and trying different track sections in the next gear. (4th instead of
3rd) I crashed more than anyone else at the school. Aren't you guys proud of
me. :-) I now need a new front number plate, levers, gearbox gasket, and
another rear fender. I learned alot, but would have to think long and hard
about spending $150 on another school. I should be able to field questions
about the different things that he taught.

Yeah, I gotta wonder if the video tapes are or are not more effective as
the first hand training. Even still I watch the tapes over and over again.
Cerebellum has a hard time getting the new code off the stack. Must be
the beer. :-)

I knew we could count on you.

Lake Whitney's a heck of a nice area isn't it? I camped down there
a couple of years ago, and canoed on the Bosque River before that.
I brought my little XL125 on the camping trip, and I had a great
time exploring the lakeshore and the dirt roads to the south. It
must have been spring '89 since the Texas wildflowers were in bloom
(bluebonnets, Indian paintbrushes). As I was *ripping* down those
dirt roads (and across a strand of barbed wire with no probs
thankfully!), I stumbled across the MX track. I knew there was one,
but not where...

After carefully negotiating the caleche road to the track, I saw a
few folks riding. There was nobody at the gate, and it looked like a
free-for-all, so I hit the track for a lap or two with my tiddler!
That's all I could stand as those big jumps scared the piss out of me
no matter what bike I was on. Well after maybe a lap some dude told
me I couldn't ride on the track with the lights etc. on my bike.
Well sod off you, I tried to explore the rest of the area a bit but I
wasn't wearing a lot of gear.

How long did you say the cross-country course was? I can believe the
woes you had with that Texas rock and mud. 'Course we have had/will
get a lot of rain here too... so I didn't bother to take the YZ with
me for this weekend. There should be a few chances to rock & roll
before the snow comes.

God I miss Texas sometimes. The piney woods, Fredricksburg,
Kerrville, New Braunfels, Austin... I promise I will get there next
spring. I'll have my DR350 dialed by then, and maybe bring the YZ
too. See you on San Jacinto Day!
