The KLX 650 and KLR 650 share upper ends. Its the lower end where they differ.
The KLX has a different set of cases that lowered the overall engine height by
an inch. Before buying I would spend time studying the KLR and KLX fiches,
comparing part numbers for such lower end parts such as bearings, shafts,
gears, clutch parts, crankshaft, etc.
If the two bikes share these parts, keeping the KLX running will not be a
problem. If the majority differ, understand the clock is ticking on parts
availability for the KLX. The atermarket is still capable of providing
plastic/suspension/pipes/seats and the other parts.

The last shop I worked at owned one. I dont know if the parts we had on this
beast were Stroker production stuff or not... Anyway the story goes that LR
had given the shop owner some stuff to try out..exhaust, airbox and carb I
think... The net result was a very large angry bike. The suspension was a
little soft and the motor could provide escape velocity. It pulled much harder
than a two stroke two fifty.... close to a new CR500 but with a longer over
run... The bike was a three hundred pound menace..... and I miss it dearly.

Met some big dude fron the dez at a local ride spot here with one of
those things. There were a few large puddles which this dude took
great pride in emptying by charging threw them at warp. Our fav wall
climb had a 2ft deep pond at the bottom, so we all bagged on it except
the 650 dude. he dissapeared in a splash the size of Hiroshima and the
next thing we know is he is on top, roosting off half the height of
the wall. What a bike. Little fans on the radiators even. I was so
inspired I sucked a cylinder full of muddy water into my DT250.

I forgot about those... The later models had those, our bike didnt have them
from the factory, we used a pair off of the DS KLX650 complete with temp
sensor..
Harvey-
The season's over I'm gettin' drunk.
