Not that I plan on going fast on it, but I was just wondering what a
safe sustainable top speed would be (give or take 10 mph) for a '97
KDX200. What I'm getting at is I'm just wondering how hard it would
be to make that bike street legal or if it's just so geared for trails
only that I shouldn't even think about it. Would be nice to be able
to ride it to trails that are within 3-4 miles of my house... Not
even sure I wanna go there, though, cuz then I'd have to worry about
registering it, getting a plate for it, insurance, etc, etc.

I think you'll find the bike is pretty fast due to gearing. Mine would
run away from my buddies YZ250 on the bulldozed dirt roads between
single track. Not sure what the top sustainable speed was, but I'd
guess-timate it was comfortable up to about 50mph.
Read up on long open throttle runs on two strokes. Many overheat at
the exhaust port, and others have a tendency to sieze if you chop the
throttle after sustained high RPM. Never had a problem with my KDX,
but only did top gear blasts for a mile or less.

Up to 50? That's all I needed to hear. :-) And I'm kinda glad to
hear it so it will stop me from even considering making it legal for
the road. The whole point of buying the trailer I just did and stuff
was so that I could get a purpose-built-offoad-only bike that I
wouldn't have to insure and get registered and all that stuff. Damn,
I can't *wait* to get my hands on that bike. I'm thinking of how to
attach my digital camera to the handlebars so I can put it in movie
mode and capture the 8 feet high jumps I'm planning on making on it.
:-D Or something like that. WHOO HOO!!!!

I think you'll love it. I only sold mine because I had multiple bikes,
and my bikeless buddy was begging for it. He never rides it now, but
won't part with it.

I was way faster in the woods on the "slow" KDX than I ever was on the
CR250 that replaced it. Kind of bums you out finding the limits of
your abilities like that, but there was no denying it. Heh.
