A you all know, we are buying the '09 RMZ 250 from the local pro this
week after he sets it up. So here I am yesterday at the track and out
comes this for sale sign on a mint '03 KX125 so I took a ride, long
story short, it's in my trailer now for me. The Mouse can have that
heavy 250, I got me a KX.. Yeah..

Rowdy Mouse Racing, Team Green Baby, still!!!

Scotty, dude, you've got it BAD.
Welcome to our madness.
Have fun, but be careful. That 125 will smack you down a lot harder
than the 100 could, if you give it a chance. OTOH, not as hard as that
250F might have...
I'm really glad you've documented your long strange trip for us here
on RMD. It's been fascinating to watch the slide from "supportive and
mildly interested" to "hooked like a carp". I hope you guys can make
it to Scrapefest next summer.

Scotty has the more practical strain of the bug.
I got another roach bike yesterday.
1980 XR80 - probably for parts.

Going by Jim Cook's logic, the 250 will be easier to ride.
"I dunno, Jim. I'm not sure I can handle a 300".
"Oh, that's the easiest one to ride".

Of course I'm comparing lemons to limes to blueberries, but...

Bite your tongue! Have there really been *significant* improvements in
motorcycles since 1980? Yeah, water cooling -- which we did without for a
LOOOOONG time. What else?

Well, my 2000 XR80R is air cooled and has dual drums just like the
1980.
But the 1980 does have dual shocks vs. the 2000 monoshock.

Plus the 1980 needs more parts than the 2000 does.

Hrm. A criterium (singular of latin 'criteria') is only a bicycle race;
'criterion' is what I should have used, but I don't think its plural should be
'criteria'. Anybody got an OED handy? Mine is buried.

No OED, just Merriam-Webster's (which includes a nifty application CD
in the back of the book)

I looked up criteria and found both of these:

criterion
Main Entry:cri£te£ri£on
Pronunciation:kr*-*tir-*-*n also kr*-
Function:noun
Inflected Form:plural cri£te£ria \-*-* \ ; also -ri£ons
Etymology:Greek krit*rion, from krinein to judge, decide — more at
CERTAIN
Date:1622

1 : a standard on which a judgment or decision may be based
2 : a characterizing mark or trait
synonyms see STANDARD
usage The plural criteria has been used as a singular for over half a
century *let me now return to the third criteria — R. M. Nixon*
*that really is the criteria — Bert Lance*. Many of our examples, like
the two foregoing, are taken from speech. But singular criteria is not
uncommon in edited prose, and its use both in speech and writing seems
to be increasing. Only time will tell whether it will reach the
unquestioned acceptability of agenda.

criterium
Main Entry:cri£te£ri£um
Pronunciation:kr*-*tir-*-*m, kr*-ter-*y*m
Function:noun
Etymology:French crit*rium competition, literally, criterion, from
Late Latin criterium, from Greek krit*rion

Hmph. Just because people use it doesn't make it right. If everybody else

Is the criterion-criteria formation actually correct in Greek? Given that

Pro's don't 'set up' bikes they intend to sell. When a pro says he's
setting up a bike before he sells it to you, it means he's taking off
all of the go-fast parts, and you get the junk he has lying in his
shop.

Maybe selling it to you, but that is not the way Tony rolls. Every year
he sells his bikes, every year there is a waiting list for his bikes,
and every year he spends hours setting it up for whoever buys it. Last
year Olivia got his 250 and she just kicked ass on it, second place in
her division by less then ten points. Tony is great with suspension, and
loves working with the kids too.

When we made the deal he told me exactly what would be in there when I
got it. He told me he would be taking out the race cams and that is what
the engine builder is doing tomorrow. I am sure I would be welcome to be
there for the work too. He told me it would come with compression
piston, crank, ported and polished etc. Everything else (pipe, shocks)
was to be back to stock (see below), this was the deal we made. If there
were any other "tricks" in there during the season, I didn't pay for
them, or expect them. I also get hooked up with his engine builder for
any work or maintenance I need over time. I know both of them pretty
well and I am sure they only want the best for me and The Mouse.

This week however two of his sponsors stepped up with unexpected
surprises! Pro Circuit said we could keep the exhaust, which initially
we were told was to swapped out for stock, and Factory Connection fedex-
ed forks, shocks, and lighter springs, all set up specifically for Jessi
at 115 pounds, and matched to her riding ability. Saturday when we pick
up the bike, Tony is going to set up the sag, and clickers. That was a
huge surprise, but again, we know the FC guys pretty well too.

Quite frankly $3500 for a 09 RMZ250 with 17 hours on it, stock would
have been a good enough deal for me. Didn't expect to get his "secrets"
such as custom cams, and Showa suspension in the first place although I
could have kept the cams if I wanted to pay extra. Any way you look at
it, I think I got a hell of a deal...

"I am Tosk".. Although I am sworn to secrecy I will tell just you;).
Tosk is a reptilian creature featured on a star trek episode. This
fellow is a race that is born and bred to be hunted by the masters. Tosk
has the ability to cloak and become invisible, and is a very formadible
prey. He can not tell of his flight and why. His mission and purpose in
life is to be hunted, and specifically, die with honor. He is "Tosk, the
hunted". ;)

Yup, during the summer they come to the track every Thursday and do

You're buds with the FC guys, but you post on rmd for n00bie help with
your suspension set up?

If I was on a first name basis with a suspension tuner from Factory

Well, "freinds" to the point that we bullshit at the track and races
between motos, I usually park near the vendors and I am somewhat of a
chatty guy. During the summer he comes to the track on Thursdays and to
*some* of the races (he usually follows a differnet division). When he
is there he does free sag and clickers for anybody, even if you don't
have his suspension on the bike, sometimes I flip him a twenty. However,
never having had him rebuild or service our suspension, and the season
being over so he isn't at the track anymore, I wouldn't feel comfortable
just calling him, although I am sure I could. I would imagine he knows
that since I will have FC in my bike now, I will probably use him next
season, so it's an investment for him. Either way, sorry if I was
unclear, he is not a sponsor, yet;) As to them putting the stuff in our
new bike, I'm sure it was more of a favor to Tony (who they sponsor)
than it was to us.

If I called anybody, it would probably be Bill from C Cycle, he is at
more of the races and He and Kevin from Kevins race service are always
there to help. Either way, I spent some time with Tony yesterday and I
think I got a pretty good handle on the suspension on the KX...

C-Cycle does my stuff. I've always been happy - but I'm very
unsophisticated.

I'm pondering coming up to ride tomorrow, unless I can finagle a woods
ride. But the track pipe is on and the bark busters aren't... and what
I really need is just to ride some, not wrench time. My life is mucho
wrench time right now, which is fine, but I just need to vent some

Not looking good right now. I may need to go back to an "emergency"
job I worked until 9pm yeaterday, painting a little girl's room before
a realtor's open house. That sorta blew my strategy for the weekend -
but I made some dollars which is good.
Rolling paint is really rough on my wrists for some reason.

Maybe if I get enough done this morning I can squeak up there for a
couple hours after lunch.

I'd better not spend too much time here desk-spoding.

Me too.

Great idea for a new product: a paint roller with a bend in the handle
like those "ergonomic" snow shovels? The MotoGroove Roller System?

Me three. Hell, the only thing that *isn't* rough on my wrists these
days is soaking in hot springs.

I'd buy one!

Were those airless sprayers just a gimmick or did they actually work well?

Airless sprayers are great for doing say a whole house, primer, pretaped
and such, but lately I have been using my power roller, inside and out.
Loved doing father in laws house last year with it, worked like a charm.
I use the roller to put down the paint in one hand, and back brush with
the other... The only thing that slows you down is moving the ladder.

Back brush? You bathe while you're painting? Cool!

Aside: I visited the orthodoc today. On my way home I noticed that somebody
had spray-painted a big TOSK on a piece of plywood on the fence around a
construction project and thought of you.

The good news is a few bits of cartilege floating around in the hip joint.
Outpatient surgery, crutches for a week, full recovery in 6-8 weeks. I'm
waiting until ski season is over. The idea of being pain-free when I walk is
appealing. The bad news is that it will probably take LOTS longer than 8
weeks. OTOH, summer is a good time to sit inside with the AC on and watch TV.
