Hey all,

Well, once again bad things are happening! I went down to storage and lubed the
chain and applied lots of brake cleaner to the discs and it looks like all is
well there.

But, new problem to report. When I changed the oil I found a lot of little
metal shavings on the magnetic bolt that you remove to let the oil out. After I
drained the oil I looked it over and there was a glitter effect from what I
assume are metal shavings suspended throughout.

So I am wondering just f&^@#%$ed I am at this point. I changed the oil under
the supervision of my coach's Dad two weeks ago and it looked fine then. I
distinctly remember him showing me the bolt was clean and not messy. The oil
was very clean too though, and he said we could have waited on that change, so
maybe that is why the bolt was spotless then. Since that oil change I have
ridden 3, maybe 4 times at the most. All times it was pretty low key too. I
ride for a long time, but I am still at a level where I am not pushing the
engine's limits. Not by a long shot :) Coach has told me that at this point an
oil change every several rides is enough, and he has been right about
everything else so far, so I am puzzled by this.

Also, I cleaned out a couple of spare air filters today using Twin Air cleaner.
Damn that stuff is stinking up my apartment! What is in that stuff?? Is it
dangerous to use indoors? I figured it was best to not let the air filters dry
outside before I oil them lest they get dirty, but I hope I can do that in the
future. And while I am asking about Twin Air, that stuff was almost $20 for the
large jug I bought. I used about a fourth of it to clean two filters in the
same tub. I was going to do the other two at the same time ( I have four ) but
there was a lot of mud in the bottom of the bucket at this point so I just
stopped at two. I am hoping that it is not going to cost me $20 a month for
this stuff. Again, coach has said a new filter every few rides is okay for now,
but the day is soon approaching when I need to do it every ride.

Anyhow, thoughts are appreciated here. I thank you all for all your help thus
far as I take my first stab at maintenance on my own. I just hope that metal
thing does not spell doom for KaTooM...

The metal particles probably aren't anything to worry about. It's normal to
have that if you have aluminum clutch plates.

As for the filter oil, No Toil is a brand of oil that isn't petroleum based
and cleans up with regular soap. IMHO, it's much easier to deal with than
the petroleum based oils.

Your escapades are entertaining.

All the "glitter" was not from the AL clutch plates. Aluminum does not
stick to a magnet.

Just don't use it on your Uni Filters ..... Even the Uni rep says the seams
will separate when using No-toil.

You have a KTM right? It's normal. Honest. Japanese bikes don't have
the magnetic drain plug, so you never know its there.

Best to do it outdoors if you can. Probably not dangerous, but the
fumes won't do you any good.

You ought to be able to rinse the old stuff back into the bucket.
After that let it settle and decant the liquid cleaner into another
container temporarily so you can clean the dirt and crap out of the
bucket bottom. Lather, rinse repeat.

You might want to try using NoToil filter oil and cleaner. I was a
sceptic at first, but I'm finally coming around.

From the little bit I've followed your messages, it sounds like your
coach knows what he's doing.

I just use ERA washing machine detergent. It works great. Also works good as a
degreaser.

Dude, no worries. All trannies have metal shavings in them.. You
should instead be excited that your KTM has a magnetic drain plug to
pull all the steel out of the oil. The glitter is from the aluminum
clutch plates. When you put a new clutch in that bad boy (if you ever
have to), you can get a Barnett Steel (i.e. steel clutch plates) clutch
that will not pollute your oil so much. You should be fine. I pull a
full magnetic tip's worth of shavings out of the .38 Special every time
I change the oil..(4-6 rides depending on how lazy I am that week).
Also, switch to "No Toil" filter shit. Its "da bomb" as
David "Ganksta" Jones would say.

Open a window!

At least you didn't try to clean the filter using Berryman's Carb-dip - you'd
probably be in the hospital now. Months later, I still can't get the clinging
stink out of my garage...

I change my trany oil every few rides, try to change it every 8 hour of riding!
My dealer told asked me "if I shift without using the clutch?" Nope, well
sometimes I do. :) Well he said it looks like you dont use the clutch, some
of you drive cogs (I think thats what he called them) look worn!
Now I change the trany oil alot! and I think I use the clutch most of the time,
bummer!
Oh, yea, when my bike broke, the oil was just changed that day, and I had
alittle less metal on my magnets than ussual, exept for a long peice , kinda
looked like a hair or needle about half inch long.
