Is it possable to insure a dirt bike with out having to pay the same premiums
as a street bike? I'm mostly worried about theft.

Insurance through Farmers Ins. run me $65 a year for Theft, Fire and Liability.
I think that is one of the better prices I see when this topic comes up, but I
also have several vehicles and the home under Farmers so you get a bit of a
break with several policies.

I go with Progressive and I think they
usually go by cc's when deciding how
much to charge. I have liability and
comprehensive coverage on my WR250F
for $80 a year. That includes theft and
they threw in $1,000 worth of after-market
replacement parts coverage. The coverages on my streetbikes are
cheap, too. I live in the SF bay area so, depending on where you live, it
will probably be cheaper for you.

No reason you should have to insure it as a street bike. Most companies
have "recreational vehicle" policies especially designed for off-road
vehicles. Just be careful to describe your machine as a "trail bike".
The coverage you're looking for is Comprehensive-covers for fire, theft,
vandalism and almost anything other than Collision and Liability.

Do any of you race? If you do, then coverage is excluded. Make sure you
read your policies.

I paid just over $100/year on my ATK when brand new (with State Farm).
This is liability & comprehensive. Having several vehicles and my home
policy with SF makes a difference. Age may also be a factor if you're
getting liability insurance.

Mr. Brown

If a person goes out and races an Am. race on Sunday, then on Thurs. his bike
gets ripped off from his garage 100 miles from the race track, how in the hell
can the race void his insurance ? ? ? Please explain !

It is common practice in SC for them to deny it. You can't just buy theft
insurance so you have to get comp and whatever. Thus, there is an
opportunity for fraud. The way around this for the insurance companies is
to deny coverage if race or participate in any competitive or organized
riding.

My bikes are covered under recreational policies. I can't cover my race
bike but I do cover the wifes.

Ivan

Interesting,

I have just enquired about covering my bike for theft and fire only
and insurance companies here in NZ don't really want to know about
motorcycles. Even industry tailored policies are expensive

I can get cover at about US $400 for a KTM EXC 400 but there are all
kinds of exclusions.

In comparison it costs me about US$150 to comprehensively insure my
house and similar amounts to insure my rental properties, including
liability cover.

Go figure what would carry the most risk a rental property or a bike

What insurance company is that with? Have you tried Progressive?

I'm in the US. Maybe it's because I have
4 bikes covered? Maybe it's because I
have a motorcycle license? I'm an AMA
member? I'm 38? I did the MSF Advanced School? I don't know why I got
such a good deal, but all four bikes (2 WR's, an
FZR600 and a GSXR750) cost me about
$400 per year.
