Ok, I have been reading on thumpertalk.com and other places about the
Gord Mods
http://users.crocker.com/~mwilliams/Yankee_Mods.htm
Yet I have ordered from BajaDesigns the 1996 spark arrestor and 58
piolt/ 162 main jetts..
Yet, I have also read from a thumpertalk subscriber that:
02 xr400 just installed baja new exaust tip & removed air box snorkel.
Rejeted to 58 piolt/ 162 main and installed 49 state needle. Fuel
screw tried at 2 -2 1/2 open.
After bike is warmed up if you crack the throttle fast the bike the
motor coughs or if opened really fast, stalls rite off idle. If bike
is in motion it runs OK. These mods made a big difference in
performance, but some thinks not right now.

Now I am returning the jet kit from BD -- I need suggestions -- My
plub is reading "Black and wet". No mods except aftermarket air
filter.

Can you help?
---Still learning --

Tear out the intake insert (this is the biggest performance gain you can
do). Cutting the first layer of the filter backfire screen is good too, but
a bit more involved (you need to epoxy the edges to prevent screen fragments
from getting into the motor). Cut the inner "window screen" layer and
remove the heavy stuff in the middle - this leaves a single "window screen"
layer. The aftermarket filter doesn't buy you much unless you're going the
No-Toil route - the stock filter works very well. Don't use a K&N. If you
are running close to sea-level then the re-jet kit is manditory. Use
something between a 55 and 60 pilot (depending on temperature) and a 155 to
160 main. Keep the needle at position 3. I currently use a 58 pilot and a
158 main with excellent results, though I think a 160 main would be better
in the summer. Keep your exhaust stock.

Oops - I meant to say that I use a 158 in the summer - a 160 would probably
be better in cooler temps.
