What kind of maintenance would I be looking at for a recent (2000 something)
KLX300R. My baseline for comparison would be my 86 XR250.

Am I looking at valve adjustments every month, once a year?

Is there something else you have to stay on top of, or is a real bear to do
yourself?

I'm a once a month (maybe?) rider on quad trails, and dink around in the
back yard. No Hare Scrambles. I might want to try an enduro some day.

I'm trying to choose between a KXL300, XR400 WR4**F (400, 426, 450), or
DRZ400.

Thanks,

Ken

I came >< close to buying a KLX when I was looking for a new(er) bike.
Do the research closely. They (can) be very good bikes. After a lot of
upgrades. Seems the hot ticket is to replace the CV carb, beef up
something
in the clutch or shifter, if I remember right, and several other
things. To make them
reliable and trail worthy.
The clincher(s) that made me back out of the deal while the salesman
was
doing a credit check on my loan application was 2 things. The sub-frame
is not removeable. If you crash and bent the sub-frame....doh! and the
other
was the routing of the front brake hose. It routed around under the
bottom of the
fork leg with a metal tube. Right where I was sure the first big rock
was
going to hit and crush the brake line tube.
I walked out of the dealership and went and bought a GasGas, no
regrets.
