I'm considering buying a used 1989 Suzuki LT500. Can anyone give me any
advice on what to look for as far as signs of abuse, neglect, or defects?

I have been told to look specifically for those with the eight bolt
cylinders, but was also told that many of the Suzuki quads have
bearing/case wear problems around the crankshaft and counter balancer.

As a friend told me: A stock Honda will run forever, a stock Yamaha will
break if abused, a stock Suzuki will break on the trailer on the way to
riding.

Also, why do you think you need a 500... They are heavy, longer and wider
that any other quad... Just wondering...

I would only buy one if it is in stock form, (stock bore). Some had base gasket problems,
but only when highly modified. The 87 only has 6 head bolts and 88-90 have 7 head bolts. I
had an 87 for 3 years (no Problems) Just sold it too...

If properly maintained, It should be as reliable as any other ATV. If you would settle for
less torque/power a 250R would be nice. The LT500R was a little to big for me. It handled
great though. I just can ride a 250 longer without getting tired. I also have a Tecate 4
that has considerably more torqe than a 250R. It feels close to a 500. The bad thing is
finding one. It's extremely RARE...

Heard many rumers about case related problems. My 87 LT500R ran a 560 kit with 210 lbs of
compression that hammered the crank. NO PROBLEMS IN 3 YEARS. Eventually I went back to
stock to run pump gas...

If I find a bone stock one, I'll buy one. It's a good machine and hard to come by in good
shape.

I think this is just rumers, although it could happen. even to a Honda.

In General, Honda is best, but it won't run forever if you don't change the oil. In
other words, They are as good as you maintain them...

He probably wants MORE POWER, Ideal for a bigger/heavier person.

LT500-- If you decide to get one just expect to spend some
money! They are`nt dependable, parts are hard to find, they use
massive amounts of gas and yes they are big, but if you want to
get to the top first,if you want torque to spare, if you want
to haul some serious butt, LT 500 is the only way to go!
There is some expensive machine work to be done on the case
but once thats done they are as dependable as any 2 stroke.
I`ve got an 1988 LT500 and I love it! Try to find
one that someone has already done the bottom end machine

How much is a fair price to pay for a completely stock 1989 LT500?

I'm not so sure the blue book values are accurate enough to go by
considering the availability of machines like the LT500?

RP,

I think $3200 is a good avg price if stock. I would pay up to 4K if its
in perfect condition and 1990 (lk brand new).

I think (depending on cond.)

87 2000-2800
88 2400-3200
89 2800-3600
90 3200-4000

Good gosh, where do you guys live that you have to pay so much for a
used ATV? Here in California near Pismo Beach, it is rare to see used
quads of that vintage for so much money. A friend of mine just bought
a cherry 87 Honda Fourtrax 250r for around $1800. Considering that the
Hondas are the most desirable quads around, your estimates seem a bit
high for a Suzuki LT 500. Suzuki's are not my cup of tea, but the
prices for a used quad like that should be quite a bit less than that
of a new one, especially a 90, which is now 6-7 years old. I paid $850
for my 86 ATC 350x in 1991, and that seems to be the range they go for
now (800-1000).

BTW, my ATC 350x runs circles around another friend's LT 500, for the
couple of hours it does run before something breaks on it. Poor guy
just keeps spending more and more money to keep it running, and never
really enjoys his riding time because he's afraid it'll break something
else. Engine parts, suspension parts, you name it, he's broke it.

Good luck in your search! Gerard 86 350x Pismo Dunatic

250Rs might be the most desirable but I believe it is the 88 and 89 models
that everyone is trying to get there hands on. You might find them cheaper,
but $3200 for a LT500 is about average here in AZ. A good 350X could get you
$1500. I have heard used and even new ATV's are cheaper in Calif.

I found some examples of used ATV's in my area, 2 weeks' listings

88 Blaster $1300
89 Warrior $2500
88 Suz 250 4WD w/winch $2950
94 Banshee w/sand tires and knobbies $4500
87 Warrior w/road trailer, sand tires, knobbies, Supertrapp $2900
? Yamaha 3 wheeler w/ utility trailer (tow behind ATV) $450
92 LT 250 w/ sand tires and knobbies $2900
86 LT 250 w/ sand tires and knobbies, FMF pipe, Race Tech shock, $1750
90 and 91 Blasters $1200 ea (probably former rentals)
89 Blaster w/sand tires and knobbies, pipe $1450
87 Warrior $2500
96 Banshee $5400

This is why those earlier price estimates seemed so high.....

Hi Guys!

I have been going to the dunes since before I was born. My parents had
dune buggies back in the early 60's. In the many years since then,
I've seen some pretty unusual vehicles in the dunes.

Golf cart

Armored personnel carrier. I got to ride in it.

A guy skiing behind a Jeep Cherokee on the sand highway.

A lowrider Riviera on sand highway.

A front engine dune buggy with a Corvair engine.

One guy in Coos Bay in 1971-72 with a Suzuki jeep-type vehicle that had
a Mazda RX-3 (?) engine. Wow, did that thing rev!

Snowmobile.

Harley choppers.

Datsun station wagon, stock.

Has anyone seen other weird stuff in their favorite riding areas?

How bout a dump truck converted to a water truck, tipped over in a berm at
a motocross track? It made that section of the track a mudhole.!!!

Here's how it happened..I was in the truck as a passenger....

Hmmm. Of the strange things I've seen in the des, I remember a few:

-A hot air balloon doing touch and goes across the des. He could barely
get high enough to clear the power lines, then back down to the ground
where he'd smack pretty hard, rise up a bit and continue this pattern.
In the middle of NOWHERE! This guy was definitely lost, and probably
very low on propane. Didn't seem to quite know what he was doing.

-A fully-functional, *flying* B-series bomber. Don't know anything about
military or aircraft history, but it was old, propeller-driven, and
*loud* - definitely the ultimate "thumper" sound. (Of course, anyone
who's been riding at Ocotillo Wells in the last 25 years should already
know about this one.)

-A guy water skiing in the middle of the Anza-Borrego desert. He was
skiing down Coyote Creek being pulled by a 3-wheeler on the river bank.

Have a good weekend...Go Riding!

This wasn't such a wierd thing to have in a riding area, but it was funny
(in a mean-spirited sort of way). Once I was riding in the area where
they have the Quicksilver Enduro in central California. I was riding
along the road, and there was a guy on a three-wheel ATV (they hadn't
discovered the fourth wheel idea at that time). This guy had a tow truck
following slowly behind him. To the right was a very steep mountain bank
(down). This guy was riding along looking down there. I stopped and he
asked "Have you seen a Bronco around here? I couldn't get it out, and now
I can't find it." I'd like to see the tow bill.

Here in Idaho, they have a National Guard and Marine Reserve base. I was
riding with my friend last fall. Actually, we were not riding, we were
trying to get the water out of his engine (another funny story) when an
Apache helicopter came very slowly down the creek, about 50 feet high.
Man, what a mean looking machine that was. I just thought of how bad that
machine gun under the nose could make you feel.

In the same general area, there is a wreck of an F4 Phantom. Actually,
some people claim that it was a helicopter. There are small pieces all
over, so you can't really tell.

One morning we went riding at the local riding area and saw a couple of
people lying face down on the ground next to a car. I was sure that we
had just stumbled upon a murder scene, but when we got closer they
jumped up got in the car and took off. Must have been a wild night.

Last week we were riding on a section of tight single track trail when
we came across five 10 to 13 year old girls on roller blades. Obviously
our killer trail from hell has tamed down a little over the years.

GERARD,

Would it be better to buy a new Yamaha Blaster for $3,300 or a Mojave
for $4,300, better yet a Banshee for $5,600? Again, used atvs have kept
their value very well and the price ranges I mentioned are for good cond
to excellent cond., no crap...

Maintenance is the key to reliability, but it's hard to match the
reliability of a LT500 to that of a 350X. The ATC350X will last longer
than MOST...I own one too.

BTW - I paid $625 for mine and I'll bet I can sell it for $1200 now...

Out at Lucerne Valley there is a Marine Corps bombing range not far from
a dry lake they use in desert races. When I spent several hours out
there next to my seized bike I could see helicopters and jets and hear
bombs exploding. Real comforting!

Hey, cool to see that you share an interest in the odd at the dunes
too. I once saw a guy with a 713 Mountain Rat Chevy motor in an 800lb

OK, no bizzare vehicles this time but the G-string sparked an old Buttercup
memory, back before they had permanent bathrooms at Buttercup. I don't
remember when but It was a holiday weekend. We had noticed a couple of
beautiful hardbodies in there next-to-nothing bikinis. They passed by our
camp several times riding double on a 200X three wheeler. My friend Mark
decides he's gotta plant a land mine (number two!) a couple of bowls over. Any
ways, when he comes back he tells us this story. He's squatting down at the

The wife and I were riding in an area here in Colorado, just outside of
Divide. The area is pretty popular with some hard-core off-roaders (4x4).
The trail we were riding is called Hackett's Gulch. The trail is
marked as a black diamond trail (for 4-wheelers) but it is pretty
easy on a bike. We had just left the South Platte river, headed
South. There is a pretty nasty, off-camber hill climb that one must
achieve to get out of the canyon. To the North, out of the gulch,
is a 4' high rock ledge that requires some pretty heavy duty ground
clearance and a winch wouldn't hurt. To the North, across the
Platte, the only way out is a 1/4 mile long, 30 degree, decomposed
granite hill climb. This is after the 2' deep water crossing. I've
made this hill climb once in about 5 tries on a bike. Now that
you've got the picture, we had just gotten out of the gulch and
made the ridge when I came roosting around a corner and there was
a guy standing in the trail. Now this is odd enough as it's about
8 or so miles, but right behind him is 1) a bone stock Jeep Cherokee,
and 2) a bone stock Wrangler. I pulled over and started laughing.
Biff and Buff in the Wrangler stopped and said "Does this trail
go all the way through?" I said, "Yea, but do yourself a favor.
Stop here, take about a 1 mile walk down the trail and check out
where you're headed. It doesn't get any easier than this and
in about 30 minutes it's gonna suck to be you." They weren't
happy.

Then there was the time we were toolin' down the trail and
came up on a Camaro. ;)

I myself am not replying to answer your question, but if you are
looking to buy an ATV, I thought I should try my luck here.. I have a
1996 early release Yamaha Banshee, which was bought in June last year,
never duned, totally stock, always EXCELLENTLY maintained, looks JUST
like new! I am selling it to buy myself a KLX650, and I am awefully
sorry to let it go, after all the care I have put into it.. anyways, I
want $5300 Canadian firm, IF you are interested. If not, anyone else
here reading this interested? I live in British Columbia near the
border, for reference. TTYL

The wildest thing I've seen in the dunes, was a drunk 4wheeler, blasting around
in a full size PU with 4 people in it. So he does a 20-30MPH jump over a razerback,
lands upsidedown, mashes everyone inside the truck except himself. He goes out
in handcuffs, everyone else went out on a backboard.

We were out riding trails and stopped to take a break. As we stood
around bench racing we could see in the distance a group of babes on
mountain bikes comming our way from ahead of us. One of my buddies in the
middle of a sentence and with out changing his expression takes a swig of
his water bottle and empties the rest into the lap of my other friend. His
mx pants are immediately stained from the crotch down to the knee and it
looks like he soiled himself big time. As we chat up the babes about
directions, trail conditions, etc. none of them will even look at him.

I have been riding in the Cascades in the Taneum area and had both
A-6's and A-10's fly almost directly over me. Other times, I have just
heard them through the trees -> damn loud and below you down in some canyon.
The A-10's were in formation and on the deck, I was on a ridge so they went
over me and dropped below me following the terrain. Way cool...

I used to have a job designing graphics hardware for networked M-1 tank
simulators, they later added A-10 and AH-64s. I used to love
taking a break and taking an A-10 for a spin and blasting a bunch
of tanks.

I learned one important thing from that experience; I wouldn't want
to be in a tank!
