I have a '92 YZ80 with some top end damage. The crank main bearings seem
OK but the lower connecting rod bearing seems a bit worn. There is some
up and down play as well as side to side play. I'd like to just fix the
top end and avoid splitting the cases if possible. How much play is
acceptable in this bearing? I plan to use the bike to teach my 9 year
old how to ride. It will NOT be a race bike. The rest of the bike is a
bit tired also. Any advice is appreciated.

A rule of thumb is if you can feel any up and down play in the lower
bearing it needs to be replaced you will always feel side to side play that
is normal. I know it is a pain to do but if you don't do it then what money
you just spent on the top end is wasted! because it will cause that new top
end to wear out fast. Also while you have the bottom end apart I would
replace the main bearings and seals.

a bad rod bearing can lead to the piston hitting the head due to the extra play
in the bearings

There is no "acceptable" play in the lower end bearing. Don't chance
it. It won't last any length of time.
