Ok, I hope I haven't been too annoying with my posts looking for info on the
different bikes I've been considering. I appreciate the replies and your
advice has been helpful. No disrespect to the 2-stroke fans but I'm pretty
sure that a 4-stroke is best for the type of (slow) riding that I do.

Anyway I went to a dealer today and had a look at a new Honda XR200R
dirtbike and I felt the seat height was as high as I can handle (I'm 5'7").
My big question is how fast can it go? Are there any owners of recent
XR200R's out there that can give me an idea of what it's top speed is
approximately?

Dude, you crack me up when you put 2 sentences like that in the same msg. If
you're so slow, why worry about top speed? lol

No disrespect but here ya go:

So you're a comedian huh? That's fine I can take a joke but what I meant by
"the type of riding that I do" is that I'm a cautious non-aggressive rider
that doesn't have much experience. Most of the time the places I ride on
are narrow paths with hills, mud, turns, other riders, the occasional fallen
tree, etc. I don't go very fast through this kind of stuff but on occasion
I'll be on a long straight path where I can see for a long ways and I'll go
a bit faster so I would like to know how fast the bike can go before I
actually buy it.

Your dealer should have an idea. I would say around 50mph.

Thanks. I've heard from some sources that a brand new one would be faster
than 50mph and I certainly hope so.

I wouldn't worry about speed too much. When I was in high school I mostly
rode a Yamaha DT100. It was a 2-stroke and the speedo would say it would
get to 50+ mph (FWI, standard speedo's are not all that accurate). I never
could keep up with a friend and his XR200 on long straight dirt roads.
However, in trails his speed was never an issue. He was a good rider and a
lot stronger than I but I would leave him on most trails. His only
advantage was on hills where my DT didn't have the power his did to climb as
many hills.

These weren't real tight trails either. You could usually pass on the
trails in most areas so they were fairly wide.

We even switched bikes and I would leave him when I was on the XR and he was
on the DT.

My riding is mostly east coast trails and not a lot of sand dunes.

Hi, maybe I can help.
I have an 87 KDX 200 and a 90 XR 200R. They both are great bikes, but very
different.
I take the XR when I want to fool around, putt, relax, do tight trails, sit
down and crawl up the big hills.
I take the KDX when I want to keep up with my riding buds. It can handle
woops, and hills much better an faster than the XR, but if I could only have
one bike, it would be the XR. WHY? Straight gas, low maintenance, easy to
ride, quiet, it's so sweet that you can put it in first gear and walk along
beside it without it dying.

If you gear it lower than stock, 1 tooth smaller in front, so it can climb
hills and do tight trails it will barely go 40 mph. It might do 50 with
stock gearing but I doubt it.

A friend of mine got his up to 115km/h with a push bike speedo, that was a
95 or 96 model. That was with the restrictors taken out though. The new
ones probably go about the same.

By the way 115km/h is about 71mph for you Yankees
