Okay, this is from a friend of mine. He's a free lance photographer,
kind of KTM lens #1, but working for others, too.
He really loves the small YZF from the very first time he got to ride
it, a couple of months ago at some Yamaha intro.
He says there are only two bikes he felt perfectly at home right
from the beginning: some KTM 660 Rally (whatever) and the YZ250F.

The other week he worked at a 3 day test of some german enduro rag,
to take pictures of 'bergs, YZs (both types :-) and other bikes.

Up until he finished photographing on day three, he noticed that
while the other bikes got ridden in the super hot and dry
conditions as minimal as journalistically feasible, there was
always someone aboard the 250F, even during lunch breaks.

The general consensus among the journalists was that the 250F is
a great bike, very competitive in the 125 class, but would
probably be weak at getting hole shots.

So they set up a YZ250 and a YZ250F at the gates of an MX track.
Hard packed ground with a tiny cover of dust. They did swap riders
a lot but eight out of ten times the 4s got the hole shot over the 2s!!

Furthermore, he said in deep sand the 250F is much more stable
than a 520 and less stable than the 'berg, a freight train that
doesn't turn very easily. Only in deep sand it required care
to avoid wallowing, ass above the rear fender and not letting of
the throttle cured that.

He talked to amateur racers who claimed the 250F is very popular
as you can get away with only one of it per season , whereas you
need two 125s, one for practicing and one for racing.
These racers claimed, that the 250F requires much less attendance
than a 125, too.
Seems they got the same durability safety margin as the 400s,
witch means they're heavier than necessary for a pure racer,
but survive a spode's (lack of) attendance.

He says, that MX guys that don't need their bike plated, should test
ride one before spending money, they might be as hard to pry off the
seat as he was.

No, i don't own yamaha shares, for me 400cc is the minimum to
get going decently on a track. I'll upgrade to 426cc next year.

..but then, i haven't ridden that 250F yet :-)

YMMV

I let a kid ride my 00 YZ250 that has ridden the 250F. He said the only
place my bike had it on the F was in top end pull. Kind of let the air out
of me.

I have ridden the 250F , it is a really sweet bike, throttle control is
amazing on them and they fly excellent, but..I have also ridden[ own ] a
99YZ250, it will make the F look silly in the mid as well as top end, also
have ridden a friends 00YZ250 [ with the electronic carb stuff ] it will
make the F look silly every where[ well except for gas mileage and overall
noise creating capabilities :) ].

I have ridden both as well. The YZ250 has more low end and top end power than the
250F by far. The midrange power of the 250F is very strong. So, suck it up.

I agree on the comparison here. However, I have a hard time controlling the
power on the YZ250 in comparison to my 250F. Now part of that may be that I
am very comfortable with my 250F and jumping on a YZ250 is a big change.

However, I came from a '93 WR/YZ250 and was able to easily adjust to the F.

IMO, it isn't the amount of power that is the deciding factor for many of us
(spodes like me) but the actual usable power. For me, the 250F gives me
more power than I need but it is all useable for me.

You should ride my GasGas EC300. It has usable power and plenty of it. However, all
bikes have usable power. Some just require more clutch abuse than others.

LOL!! I am horrible when it comes to using the clutch.

I have been wanting to steal a ride on a GG300 but again I really like the
package of the F. The more different bikes I ride anymore the more I end up
liking the F.

I still need to swing my leg over a GG300 though.

That's a shame, because you can pick up a tremendous amount of speed by using it
properly.

I know the feeling. However, most people take a while to feel comfortable on a bike
and be able to really take advantage of the bikes better traits.

Everyone should, but not many get that chance. I bought mine without ever riding a
GG300.

A YZ 250F is a GREAT bike outa the box.... BUT with a little work it can
be a unbelievable bike!!!! My good friend has one and out of the box
it seamed to have a noticeable dead spot so he worked with the jetting
and went with a FMF exhaust system.. It made the bike a whole new
ride!!! A YZ 250F has a hole different power then a YZ 250... The
250F I think has more rounded usable power low mid and hi....And is a
truly very easy bike to ride....Twist that grip no clutch and your off
from any RPM...

I did ride Jim's GG250 and loved it. However, at the time I was a much
poorer rider (not much better now <g>) and the quick turning of the bike
really had me nervous. I was shaking a little after riding the bike b/c I
knew I could easily go faster than I did but couldn't get myself out of
trouble if something happened.

The F has been very forgiving of my mistakes.

With the economy going to the shitter though I'm going to stick with the F
for at least one more year. I was looking into the 450F and other bikes
(including the GG250) but it is not going to be in the cards now. Saving
seems more appropriate (as I only have $50 in checking as we speak <g> It
all goes to bikes <vbg>).

If I do get another 2-smoke the GG is at the top of my list.
