RT 66 is major snooze on a sportbike. Now, route 666 (191 Eastern Az)
that's a different story. Nostalgia rides are for cruisers -:)

Yeah, it did sort of interrupt my snooze when I came around a corner up near
Alpine and found -- snow. It was Halloween, but I didn't really expect a
trick'or'treat. I was on the Sportster, so maybe it was a nostalgia ride in
disguise?
Sorry, I should have looked at the header; it's massively cross posted.
BTW, Alpine IS 191-(old 666). Just the beginning though... The good
stuff is further South.

Heading up 666 from Gallup up past Tohatchi, have you ridden from
around Nageezi across the Chuska Mountains through Washington Pass to
Crystal Lake? Nice twisties and to a cooler elevation.
I haven't done 191 North of Egar/Springerville. Alpine is 8000ft and
Hannigan Meadow 9100ft or cool. The lower, more twistie section between
Morenci and Hannigan ranges between 5500 and 8000 feet. Basically 100
miles of very remote paved twisties, ranging between 10MPH switch backs
to forested sweepers.

I just read that they are changing the name of the Devil's Highway to
route 4-something or other.

There, you are further north than I was thinking. Turn off to
Washington Pass is about 50 miles north of Gallup. I don't know the
exact elevation, entering your at about 6,500 ft, it goes up to my
guess about 8,500 ft. On the other side, you wind up about 40 miles
north of Ft. Defiance and IIRC, just north of Wheatfields Lake.
No, further south. In fact way south of I-40 and other than NM being
close to Alpine Az, it's 100 miles South of Gallup; up on I-40.
Look at this Mapquest link.
Clifton/Morenci on the South and Alpine to the North.

That's way North East in NM. I looks like a straight road in comparison.
For refererece, view the video below this mapquest link.

Okay, gottcha, after hitting the zoom out button, you're south of Saint
Johns and way southwest of Fence Lake area. That'd make for some good
thumper country. If I ever move back to Gallup, I'd like to take that
trek. Eastern New Mexico is blase' in comparison.

Hell, yes. I've run that section of 666 up to where it hits 191 again in
Utah dragging a 53' trailer. Somewhat scenic but otherwise just another
road.

I was just passing through on a street bike, but there were some interesting
FS roads disappearing into the woods.
