I have started to mix Humbrol paints with oils when painting
figures. Horan uses straight Humbrol and Kessling & Rosenburg use Oils
and no one can argue with any of their styles, techniques or results :)
I never felt confortable with Humbrols because of their short drying
period and sometimes that glossy look obliterates the detail. So I mixed
the two together and the results are quite astonishing :)
For example, I mix up Humbrol Natural Wood (110) with white and Gold
Ochre oils with a dash of oil Burn Sienna for caucassian flesh colour.
The drying period is extended and does allow lots of time for shading and
highlighting - and the finish is a slight satin finish which adds a
little "realism" to the finished product.

I believe Bill Horan does mix Humbrol and oil paints. I don't understand
how using Humbrols causes your figures to turn "glossy" assuming you are
using flats and mixing the tin thoroughly.
