G'Day mates ...

Soon a friend of mine will spend some weeks holiday in Australia. He asked
me for addresses of hobbyshops in Sydney, Brisbane or Adelaide.

Any suggestion? Then mail me!

Greatings from an Antipod *

What amazes me is that Hobbyco is the best shop in Sydney. It's a sort
of KMart/Walmart of model shops, lots and lots of models, not much
variety and almost no aftermarket stuff. Sydney *needs* a decent shop.

In Melbourne try

Victorian Hobby Centre, in Swanston Street (city centre)
Hearnes Hobbies, under Flinders St Railway Station (city centre)

In Brisbane try

Hobbyrama (don't recall the address, but it's in the phone book)
Model & Hobby Centre (in the city, tell them I sent you)

Yeah right!,

The staff have no idea about what items they have in stock, are the most
expensive hobby shop in Australia & haven't got a clue about aftermarket
accessories let alone ask them to recommend something. I rang them and asked
if they had the latest Dragon catalogue available and some 17 year old "know
it all" told me that if I wanted "dragons" I should go to the Games Workshop
because they specialise in "fantasy" figures!.

Absolute Hobbies, 350 Penshurst St ,Willoughby is the best hobby store in
Sydney. The owner knows what he is talking about and actually makes models.

Hi Peter & Shane,

As far as I'm concerned Hobbyco IS NOT the best hobby shop in Sydney.
It may be just the biggest & is sometimes cheap. But on the whole I only
go there to browse & maybe pick an item or two. I much rather prefer to
spend my money elsewhere. Hobbyco was good in the 70's & 80's but has
gone down a bit. The staff are sexist, my wife went in there to pick up
some stuff for herself & was asked "if this was what her husband said he
wanted", for those who know Lorna, they will be glad to know she was
very constrained & didn't call the person any names, she just said that
this was the last time I'll buy anything from here.

The best hobby shop is Sydney is Absolute Hobbies run by Chris
Wauchope(check out his work in Hyperscale). Chris is always helpful & if
he doesn't have the item, he will order it in. It's not the biggest shop
around but definitly the best. It's always a joy to see what Chris is
working on now. I can not recommend Absolute Hobbies highly enough.

The address is 350 Penshurst Rd, Willougby, 2068, Sydney, NSW. Ph No
(02) 94172128.

Also in Sydney we have a few other good shops including the following:

Hobbies In The Hills: First floor, cnr Windsor rd & Victoria Ave,
Castle Hill, 2154 NSW. Ph No (02) 9899-5207

Also at Bankstown Airport we have Just Planes run by Jeff Isles(check
out Hyperscale again).

These shops support the local clubs & most members recommend them, they
also only go to Hobbyco if absolutly (no pun) nescessary. There are more
shops, but seeing as I haven't been to them, I can't recommend them.

Sounds just like Cheech & Chong's here in Melbourne, where you have to
fight your way through masses of pimply faced 14 year old boys
clustered around the video monitor screening all the latest RC cars
while they try to convince each other that they have a penis.

Only serious places to go in Melbourne are Vic Hobby Centre,
Metropolitan, Hearns, and for mail order Modelworks.

To add my two cents worth from New Zealand and a regular visitor to
Sydney......
Get on the train and take a trip out to Paramatta (about 30-40 minutes) west.
Paramatta has some good shops primarily if you are in to cars and Scifi

Sherrifs Minicars Church St, Paramatta (Cars, SciFi and general kits)
Bergs Hobbies Church St Paramatta (General + model trains)
Automodels Australia ..... wait for it .... Church St Paramatta (Mainly
cars)

If your friends wife is with him then drop her off at the Westfield Mall....
Church St, Paramatta.. (you knew it)

A bit of a tip!. Have a look at the Aussie Yellow pages on the Net http://
www.yellowpages.com.au. Not only do these have a phone number and address for
these and other great hobby shops already mentioned, they have links to a map
of the area!!!!

Regards Alien
We are not going to be great. We are not going to be amazing.
We are going to be amazingly amazing!!!

Sydney offers lots of little stores scattered about in the Suburbs but you
really need a car to get them, for example Just Planes at Bankstown and F-4U
Hobbies which both carry excellant aftermarket products and second hand kits.
I find that I grab a copy of the Yellow Pages in each city and start from
there, in Sydney particularly.

Shane also failed to mention Gabba Hobbies in Brisbane which is probably
worth a visit. In Adelaide the SA Hobby Centre on Rundle Mall (main street of
the City) is quite good plus there are a few others in the Suburbs. As for
Hobbyco in Sydney, I find they are variable and generally only carry new
releases although of late they have created huge discount bins which are
worth fishing through.

I have to agree with some others above though, Melbourne is the Mecca for
Hobby Shops in Oz, must be something about the climate and those cold cold
showers which they have down there.

Cheers,

Ken Bowes

Gabba Hobbies has changed its name to Hobby One and moved to Mt Gravatt.

Doesn't exist anymore. Or does, but as "HobbyOne" I never failed to mention it, I just
wouldn't recommend it unless you have bottomless pockets and just can't wait. Guaranteed to be
25% higher than the next most expensive, anywhere.

Don't forget to pack the mountain climbing gear to get from the car
park to the front door! When I visited last year they had supermarket
trollies for customers. Also seemed the staff were very frustrated
with their lady manager.

Hey All,

I find that Sheriff's Mini cars out at Parramatta and Penrith pretty good
with a large selection of out of production car kits. Some are pricey but if
you are desperate for a particular kit, they usually have it. Also Jeff the
owner travels to Japan on buying trips quite often to pick new things up.

Also, Kellets hobby at Liverpool is reasonable.

Hi All,

Sheriffs are expensive, but they do have a reasonable selection of OOP
kits with a good SF selection. Just be prepared to pay a premium for
them.

OK guys - enough HobbyCo bashing!!! I am fortunate enough to live in Sydney,
and whenever I need to find something I don't need, I head straight for
HobbyCo. There I can stroll for hours amidst the shelves stocked with useless
overpriced stuff. I also occasionally visit them just to get friendly
directions to where other shops which sell the stuff I *am* looking for might
be. Pay cheques are blissfully spent buying kits which are twice the price of
anywhere else (example - the Polar Lights J2 cost me $43.00 from Phantom Zone
- HobbyCo would have sold it to me for $75.00!). Needless to say, they are the
mecca for everything you don't want, and have never heard of whatever you do.
In short - they suck. Absolute Hobbies has my vote for the best service and
stock.

eg, Cylon Raider from Battlestar Galactica for A$200 right up
until the day the rereleases were in shop. They will also usually have
around a 20% markup on new releases. I only shop there now if there's
something I'm desperate for and can't get anywhere else.

Model Engines in Australia is a distributor of POWERMASTER fuels. They
might not be able to sell to you but could probably point you in the
right direction.
