McLaren Orange Paint

I have a 1/2 pint of actual McLaren Orange lacquer which I got from Team
McLaren at Indianapolis in 1980 (don't even ask for a sample, 'cause I will not
let any of this paint go!). There is a very close approximation in the
Gunze-Sanyo paint line (or at least there was 10 years ago!). It was a
yellow-orange color (again, please don't ask, I didn't keep any reference
regarding the stock #. However, I'll bet that the color does exist still in
G-S's line of paints.

The new issue of Motor Racing Models states that the best way to get the
color is to use MCW 2070, then shake well and let it sit for an hour and use
the top 2/3rds of the bottle.

Unless MCW reformulated his McLaren Orange, it's way too orange (MHO). Most of
us today have never seen this color except in books or mags, and I can tell you
that the color did not always photograph accurately, as it was some sort of
paint that would even look different depending on the sky conditions.
Johnny Rutherford's 1974 Indy-winning McLaren M16-D was on display at the
Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum for several years (not owned by the
Speedway, but on loan), and for a year or so, it was on the raised platform,
just inside the entrance, under the skylights. Depending on the light, it
appeared as almost a schoolbus yellow, ranging to a more orange cast if the day
was cloudy. Yes, this car was owned by Team McLaren, and carried no sponsor
decals, 1974 being a recession year in racing.
If the MCW paint is too orange, you might try toning it out with some MCW
GMC/Chevrolet "Yukon Yellow" (the Chevrolet pickup yellow used from 1935-1987
as a construction equipment paint, and now the USDOT standard color for highway
safety trucks and school busses!). This should give a very good approximation
of McLaren Orange, which is a very brilliant, yet subdued orange yellow color.

match it using Tamiya Color X-6 Orange and X-8 Lemon Yellow, mixed (about)
2:1 orange:yellow. This is thanks to Tom Hiett, frequent contributor here.
Tom, the Butterfinger hit the spot! Just got my PE for the M8B, so I guess
I'm closing in on starting.
