1. The two Thorpe books, out of print, difficult to find. "Japanese Naval
Air Force Camoflage and Markings" and "Japanese Army Air Force Camoflage
and Markings"
2. The instruction booklet from Aeromaster's "Aces of the Rising Sun" decal set.
3. Rene Francillion's "Japanese aircraft of the Pacific war"
Find these, and you're set. (the trick here: FIND them.)

How about the Model Art Extra? Besides some on individual aircraft,
there are the ones on IJN fighters, IJN bombers, IJA fighters etc.
Although the text is written in Japanese, I heard that Aviation Usk
is publishing English translations for some of the Model Art Extras.
Hope this helps,
Satoshi Sasaki

I was in Articles of War last week and they had the Aeromaster Decal
sheet/booklet and the Francillion book. The Thorpe books they get from time to
time.

So far there are four Model Art Special Issues specifically on WWII
Japanese Aircraft Camouflage:
#272: "Camouflage & Markings of the Imperial Japanese Navy Fighters in
W.W. II" (1986). This is the only Model Art Special for which Aviation
Usk has released an English translation, but others are promised. The
translations cost US$9.95 and are *well* worth their price, in my
opinion.
#329: "Camouflage & Markings of Imperial Japanese Army Fighters" (1989).
#395: "Camouflage and Markings of Type 1 Fighter Hayabusa" (1992).
#406: "Camouflage & Markings of Imperial Japanese Navy Bombers in W.W.
II" (1993).

Model Art has a series of very nice books on Japanese Colors and
Markings (IJNAF Fighters, IJNAF Bombers, IJAAF Fighters). IMHO the best
references are the two books by Ian Baker on Japanese Navy and Japanese
Army colors and markings. Very lucid, very well researched, and pretty
current. Good luck.

Unfortunately, reading Japanese would be helpful to really dig into
Japanese colors and markings. The Model Art folks have produced two good
volumes- Camouflage & Markings of Imperial Japanese Army Fighters #329 and
Camoufrage (sic) & Markings of the Imperial Japanese Fighters in WW II
#272 -lots of color, schemes, photos, unit insignias, no English. The same
company has volumes that deal with bombers, "Medaled Pilots", and special
attack units. Tons of color schemes and similar wonderful stuff is densely
contained in Koku-Fan Illustrated # 42-Japanese Imperial Army & Navy
Aircraft Color, Marking. Again, no English. Ian K. Baker,an Australian
author, has written (in English!) Nippon's Naval Air Force, and Nippon's
Army Air Force. No Color, But plenty of diagrams and text that make sense
of the more lavish Japanese publications. Sad to report, all of these
books are expensive and hard to find. Try Aviation Usk: they have a
web-site. Last but not least, the Japanese SIG of the IPMS is publishing
an exciting journal that is bringing to light lots of exciting new color
and marking info. Contact Scott Hoffmam at Hof...@qni.com
Good Luck. Will Perry
