Here's my first piece since switching (back) to oils - for good! It's
about the size of a piece of paper - 8-3/8" x 11". It's based on a
photo I took at Duxford last July. Of course, I changed the (boring!)
photo as described in the notes on this page:

As always, comments welcome.

Excellent, thanks for sharing!

Very nice work Wade!
I remember back in 1985 looking all over the place for an artist who might
do my 51D doing a low altitude climbing roll over a small church graveyard
in Culpepper Virginia, depicting an incident in a piece that Reader's Digest
was doing on my early career in aviation. Some of my Thunderbird buddies
suggested Keith Ferris! I called him and told him what was going on,
figuring he might like the idea of doing a piece for RD. When I asked if he
could do it for me. He said, "Dudley, do you have ANY idea what I would have
to charge you for doing that???" :-))))
Net result was an old still photograph I had lying around; almost an exact
copy of your painting, which appeared with the RD story! :-))

Hi Dudley,

I know Keith pretty well . . . he is without a doubt the dean of
aviation artists, and his 25' x 75' "Fortresses under Fire" NASM mural
is the most viewed, if not the most famous piece of aviation art in
the world.

Even when you get to his level of accomplishment, you still have to
sit down and research the scene - especially if you have a certain
location in mind. Then you must do studies, tonal and color, and then
if all goes well, you sit down and "paint". All this takes time, and
one must factor in the "cost" of this time vis-a-vis what other work
could be accomplished in the same amount of time.

I know you know all this, but if you think Keith is expensive, try
buying a piece of art done by a signature member of the Cowboy Artists
of America, or if you want a real heart attack, commission a Portrait
by a leading member of the American Society of Portrait Artists. Each
genre of art has it's "masters", and comparatively speaking, Keith's
pretty cheap!

Thanks,

Wade

I only tell that story for the humor of it. Asking Ferris to do my little
story illustration for RD was like a mouse approaching an elephant with
intentions of rape!! :-)))
I fully understand Keith Ferris' reasons for pricing. In fact, I vaguely
remember him telling me on the phone that if he did something at a lesser
price for someone, he would have trouble with those whom he hadn't
discounted...or something to that effect anyway.!! :-)
Our daughter and her husband are both fairly well known artists; Steve and
Janet Rogers. Jan is Florida Water Color Society and Steve is AWS and FWS.
Both work and live in Florida. I know pricing is an issue for them as well.
Look them up if you have time and see if you like their work.
If you see Keith one of these days, tell him the story came out fine, but it
would have been a lot better with his rendition of the incident to go with
it...if only I could have afforded it!!!!! :-) "A Little Help From A Friend"

All the best,
Dudley
