Eeee, when I were t'lad...and up to my middle teens, making and painting
scale models was quite popular.

Loads of models in local newsagents and the marvellous models shop (Avicraft
of Chatterton Road, Bromley).

What's more, there seemed to be a lot less graffiti, vandalism and 'hanging
around on street corners looking surly and bored'.

Now, I'm certainly not going to claim that the hobby of scale modelling
could be the panacea of society's ills, but I do wonder that youth seem to
keep hearing the message that they need more Youth Centres and the like to
avoid them being bored and getting in to trouble. My point being, my friends
and I seemed to have more ability to entertain ourselves. And it wasn't just
modelling, any kind of playing, or just going to the local park and woods
with my dog, with or without my friends.

So, anyway, as a quick and dirty method of seeing of model making is popular
across the board or just with us children of the pre-80's, how old are you?

I'm 37.

44-- started at about 8 I suppose, built a few cars, a couple tanks and ships,
a truckload of aircraft and went on to other things at about 13 when my mother
told me I was "too old to be building toy models", picked it up again at 30,
started (but not finished) a dozen or so since then, gave it up as a bad idea
last year and disposed of everything a couple months ago.

34.5 years old.

First model was at age 8. Built pretty regularly until I was 14.
Picked up the hobby again in my mid-20's. Didn't buy an airbrush until
I was 28. Been lurking on r.m.s. since 97, joined IPMS and a local

this time I'm trying to do more than "glueglueglue...paintpaintpaint". It's
a bit more expensive to do it right (And I just finished superdetailing a
1/700 IJN Subchaser...about 2 1/2 inches long...something I never would have
had the patience to do at age 10).

James,
I had the same problem with eyesight as I just reach 47.
I used to be able to focus at about 20 cms but not now. Even though I
don't generally need specs, I have bought a pair of reading glasses off the
peg for a fiver - they are brilliant and now I can get close and paint the
dials again on a 1-72 scale instrument panel.

Shakes aren't a problem for me - my painting hand is quite steady - getting
the right brush is important - I use white nylon brushes and enamel paint.
Cheers,
RufusCH.

I'll be 42 on Friday. Built my first model in 1965 (small scale Revell B-52
w/X-15) and haven't stopped yet! Been reading FSM since 1984 and still have
every issue! Joined IPMS in 1985 but let it lapse during the scandal of the
same timeframe. I sent my money in twice but never got a new membership card
or update/journal. Rejoined in 1994. Joined my first IPMS club in 1986. I
build mainly 1/72nd aircraft, Armor and automobiles. Although I build for
the sheer enjoyment this hobby brings me I do enjoy building for the shows
and competing against my peers. My wife never really minded my hobby as she
always knew where I was and not out drinking in the clubs!

Hi!

So far I've only built cars, but airplanes do look really tempting. At
the moment I'm customizing a russian Gaz51 truck model (1/43 size
diecast) into a rally truck.

I love rallying and car racing in general. Am I weird or what? ;-)

Interesting, as I've always had the shakes and have learned to use as
part of my brush technique - less paint, and let my shakey hands stipple
and dry brush it into place. I'll agree with you on getting the right
brush...

I also find I tend to be steadier when using a tweezer, or some
instrument other than my fingers to position smaller parts.

I got to high school and discovered I could get class credit for my
model building skills by taking jewelry and metalsmithing classes as an
elective.

Then I found out I could make money selling my jewelry projects...and
spend that on more models...

...then I found out women LIKE jewelry - especially when you make it for
them.

I spent my senior year convincing my art teacher I wasn't making a
mistake running off to study engineering...after four years straight of
metalsmithing, kit building, AND girls...

Hey, Major Rob - gotta quick Treadhead question for you.

Just the other day, I caught part of "Battle of the Bulge" on some cable
channel. At one point, there was a scene where a bunch of the big,
grey-painted M-47's doubling for King Tigers were coming through the
forest...all buttoned up - and I get that they were much too close together,
but here's the bit I'm unsure of....the were all waving their turrets back &
forth...barrrels swinging this way & that, like dogs sniffing for rabbits,
almost.........I was thinking that each track would have an assigned sector to
cover, wouldn't they, or do tanks really drive around waggling their guns back
& forth?

Thanks for clearing this up.
