To date I've been mainly building automobile models and use Tamiya's
Acrylics exclusively. Mainly for clean up, etc. After applying decals I
usually gloss clear coat the model with Tamiya's clear X-22.

I have several military aircraft that I'll be building soon and it is
recommended to clear coat over flat finishes with gloss before applying
decals and then flat clear coating after applying decals.

What would be the best flat clear coat to apply over Tamiya's gloss and
flat acrylics? I have Humbrols's Mattcote that says to thin with mineral
spirits. Would this react with the Tamiya paints? How about Microscale's
Clear Matt?

I've used "color-neutral" Floquil Classic enamel and POLLY Scale
acrylic topcoats over Tamiya -- both with no problems.

I have used Humbrol Mattcote thinned with Humbrol thinner over Tamiya
Clear Gloss with no problems whatsoever.

Whatever you do DON'T use the Tamiya clear flat!!
I found out a bit too late it is designed to be added (in tiny amounts) to
the bottles of gloss paints to make them flat. It is NOT an
after-completion overall coat.

Anyone wanna buy a dusty white M3 Bradley??

I found that out the hard way as well. However, I used it on a Supermodel
Bv-138 and it made the aircraft look properly trashy. Just like it has
been coated with salt spray from many overwater flights and open ocean
landings. It sufficiently impressed a number of weathering experts at the
monthly IPMS meeting. I didn't have the heart to tell them it was a
screw-up

Mike,

I made an attempt at mixing some Flat Base X21 with Clear Gloss X22 in
hopes of creating a matt clear. Ended up with the same result as you. I
started in a area not readily visible and as it dried it looked like I
sprayed flour all over it. Luckily a toothbrush saved the day and I got it
all off. You might be able to clean up the Bradley because it did seem to
bond to well anyway.

I have used Testor's Dullcoat laquer scucessfully as a falt finish over
enamels as well as acrylics for years. I thin it wioth cheap thinner
and airbrush it on.
Good modeling
