What's "Deja News"?
|
Question - I ....... am wondering about this "Deja News" reference I keep seeing pop up on RMS. What is it, where is it and how do I get there? It sounds like it'd be a good thing to access since I often read replies on RMS to questions that AOL doesn't post to the newsgroup. by Jack Gartner, IPMS |
------------ Answer - In your browser enter the URL http://www.dejanews.com and hit enter, that will take you to "Deja News". From there you can enter what your looking for; Mistel for instance, and it will search the newsgroups and pull up every listing that has the word "Mistel" in it. Then you just click on the headers and read the message. There is more you can do with your searches and the site will help you out with the details but that's the quickie lesson. You can also reply to those messages from dejanews. by Jeff Harrison, IPMS. |

Allies X Planes
|
A "What-If" speculation page by Luca Oleastri. What would have happened in the European skies if WWII has not ended in 1945? What aircraft would have opposed the allies against the technological power of Germany? In this site you will find visual answers to these questions. Some of these aircraft were never operative; others were operational immediately after the end of WWII, but their design was not influenced by the German projects as were all the aircraft of '50 (ie. the Great Britain's De Havilland Vampire). If you want some ideas on what aircraft the Axis would have lined up, browse to Luft '46 - WWII German prototypes, or to the Secret WWII Italian Planes page.

Air on the cheap
|
From r.m.s.- With the many past posts of converting scuba cylinders, portable inflation tanks, etc., I thought I'd throw out my latest attempt. Those looking for an inexpensive way to power your airbrush might consider acquiring and old, five or ten pound CO2 fire extinguisher and converting it. I'm on my way to the gas supplier to pick it up now. |
The cylinder was sent out and pressure tested, a new CO2 valve was fitted and it was filled for $22.00. Now, I have a spare and will never run out of gas (hold the navy beans, please). If you could find one, a fire extinguisher could be the way to go. I was lucky enough to have three at my parent's house, forgotten for over a decade. Just a thought... by Frank Kranick, Jr. ----------------------- Question - A friend of mine uses an old commercial fire extinguisher tank and fills it with air to use his airbrush. The biggest problem is that this provides an inconsistent air pressure with which to work. Anyone else try this? Answer- Lots of folks use variations of this - I'm working on putting one together myself now. For $20-40 you can get a 5-10 gallon air tank from an auto-parts or discount store that you refill at the local gas station - they'll hold about 120 psi with should last you at least a few evenings. I got a 9 gallon tank at KMart for $36. You can work around the inconsistent air pressure with a regulator that will give you a constant pressure - you only need 15-20 psi for airbrushing so the pressure at the brush will be steady until the tank pressure falls lower than that (the tanks usually have a cheap pressure gauge so you'll know when its approaching empty). Sears has some cheap regulators in the $20-30 range, but my local store was sold out so I haven't had a chance to try it out yet. You'll probably need $5 worth of fittings and some teflon tape to put it together. Total cost should be $50-70 for a more flexible and quiet setup than a $100+ hobby compressor (that price usually doesn't include a regulator). Yes, you have to refill the tank frequently. by Don Schmitz --------------------------- Another Idea - I use a storage air tank I bought at Sears. i installed a gauge, regulator and a moisture trap. total cost me 125.00. I fill it with an air compressor that plugs into my car's cigrarette lighter. I have never had a problem with moisture. Its cheap and I never run out. by lagnaf8917
Downloading Group of RMS Messages
|
Question - How in the heck do I "download" the group (rms messages) to disk and then read it at my leisure?? I keep seeing where people have downloaded, etc, but I can't find the right buttons to push. I am using Netscape Navigator Gold and Win '95. by Moon
|
Answer - The procedure I use for downloading messages is; 1) Set the "Flag" icon on messages you want to read later. Note- There is a limit on how many message you can download at a time. Try just a few messages at fist to establish your browser and/or CPU llmit. 2) Select "Flagged Messages" under the Edit Menu 3) Do "Save AS..." under the File Menu and name the file. The Flaged messages will be saved as a simple text file for your later reading. by RRF.
Dried paint, stuck lids & Gumout
|
Bill Thompson tip: As usual, I couldn't get a (used) bottle of paint open a while ago. The lid had glued itself in place with some dried paint, and I couldn't break the seal even with water-pump pliers and a vise grip. Remembering an earlier misadventure, I took a bottle of Gumout carb & choke cleaner and *carefully* squirted a few drops between the lid and the upside down bottle. Just be careful squirting the Gumout from the spray can; it spatters. At least the can comes with a long tube to insert in its nozzle, so it's easy to apply. The seal broke in less than a minute and the lid came off without any problem. I wiped away the dissolved paint from the lid and bottle to keep from contaminating the paint with Gumout. For those who don't know, Gumout can be found at auto supply stores. I think there are similar carburetor cleaners under different brand names; this is just the brand they sell at my local supply store. Whatever the active ingredient is, you have to admire its paint-destroying ability. Being paranoid about unknown chemical reactions, I'd try it on acrylics in a well-ventilated area.

Floquil/Aeromaster Color Chips
|
Stef Karver asked:
Is a color paint chip chart available a la Aeromaster? |
Answer; You need to write to Floquil directly at: Floquil - Polly S Color Corp. 206 Milvan Dr., Weston Ontario M9L 1Z9, Canada They have chip charts for all their colors, but they also have a "Military Color Reference Guide" with chips of their Rail, Military, and Marine (Naval) enamels plus 17 supplemental chapters cross-referencing the colors. This guide is in an 8 1/2 x 11" 3-hole loose-leaf format and useful IMHO - for about $30.00. The individual chip charts will probably be about $3.00 to $5.00 each. You might also write Aeromaster for their enamel chips - their paints are made by Floquil and are chemically identical - and their chips come on the same sized paper and can be punched to fit in the same binder as the Floquil. You will then have a cross-reference to well over 300 distinct colors. Pete Chalmers
Luftwaffe Spinner Spiral - decals or painting
|
Question - I need some suggestions for using spinner spiral decals included with most Luftwaffe after market decal sets these days. I ruined the 2 that were included on the Cutting Edge sheet for Monograms Me 110G-4. I could not get them to fit right. Handling the wet decal was a nightmare so I ended up sectioning them and applying them in pieces. This worked OK, but the spiral didn't look like anything seen in photographs of the aircraft. Have any of you had any success with these decals? Is there a way to mask and spray the spirals? via Kent on rms |
Answer #1 - Cut them into at least four sections using very sharp scissors or a new Xacto blade. When applying the sections, start at the nose of the spinner and work towards the base. Use setting solutions. After the decal has had a day or two to dry, dry brush any gaps that are left. There should be few and very minor gaps. Use an Xacto to trim any decal that overlaps the openings for the prop in the spinner base (again, only after it has completely dried). via Art on rms Answer #2 - Suggestions: if the front of the spiral has a "circle" then cut it off, if all else fails then cut the decal in half and apply the front end first (starting at the front "nose" of the spinner) and then apply the back half - it worked for me ! via John on rms. Answer #3 - Here's another method. Take some masking tape. With a steel ruler and a sharp exacto, cut a thin strip of masking tape, tapered so its pointed at one end and gets increasingly wider at the other. On a 48th scale job the strip will probably be an inch or so long, Carefully wrap the tape in a spiral around the spinner which you will already have painted white. Now spray black or black green or whatever. Pull off the tape after painting. Presto chango...a spiral! via WSchurr on rms. Answer #4 - Another idea, is to paint the spinner in the SPIRAL color. While it's drying, either xerox the decal sheet, or cut the spiral decal out, and use it as a guide for a tape mask. Then, apply the tape, and paint the spinner the base color, and remove the tape. You should have NO problem, if you are patient, and go carefully. This is how I also make fuselage bands as well... viaa Allan on rms Answer #5 - Here's something else that works.....photocopy the decal then cut it out roughly (an area bigger than the decal), lightly coat with rubber cement and stick down to the back side of masking tape, let dry for about fifteen minutes, cut out decal with x-acto knife to exact shape, lift stuck down photocopied decal off tape and apply tape to spinner. You get the exact shape with very little effort. via Tom Smithdeal.
Metal Flacks to add to paint
|
Car modeler ask "Where can I get metal flakes to add to paint?" |
Answer - Any good large art supply store sells metal powders in small vials for a lot less than LMG or any other "Hobby" supplier - mine is called "LUCO bronze powder, #32 sunbrite chemically pure aluminum" made by Leo Uhlfelder Co., Mt. Vernon, NY 10053. About $5.00 for a 1" x 3" plastic tubular vial - copper, brass, bronze, "gold" also available. VERY finely ground. by Pete Chalmers.

Russian Cockpit Colors
|
Doubters of the value of the internet to modelers should read the following recent exchange on r.m.s. - |
Question: The other day, .... I noticed that Model Master by Testors has a paint resembling the garish blue-green interiors of Soviet/Russian cockpits. However, I have seen various reference photos suggesting that interiors such as the MiG-29 or something on the line of Dark Gull Gray. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if some are grey and others blue-green or what? I am particularly interested in the interior colors of the Su-25 Frogfoot, the MiL-24 Hind, the Su-27 Flanker and the MiG-29 Fulcrum. Additionally, what are the camouflage colors for the Fulcrum and Frogfoot? If anyone knows, I would be grateful for their help. Thanks, C.J. Hamilton ----------------- Answer: Yesterday I had a chance to look inside a Mi-24P (NATO codename Hind-E) at a local airshow. The interior of the pilot & gunner's cockpits is gray, something close to Dark Gull Gray. But the control panels are green -- the color looks like Revell "Patina Green". By the way, the oxygen cylinder behind the gunner's seat was bright blue -- Testors "Light Blue" is a reasonable match (probably this is done because the liquid oxygen has the same color). The same applies to Mi-2, Mi-8 and Mi-26. Probably it is not right for "all" Mi-24s etc., but it seems to be a standard here. BTW, "Archive-Press" book on MiG-25 has six interior shots on the back cover, and the control panels are also green. Dmitry Yu. Bolkhovityanov Novosibirsk, Russia |
