I was wondering what people thought of the Tamiya 1/350 USS Enterprise
aircraft carrier kit. It's huge and looks good, but how good is the
level of detail? Are there any interior details, like inside the hanger
deck or the island?
Thanks,
Scott
Hi Scott,
I'm awaiting delivery of this beast from Hobby Link, and I've been doing some
digging on the kit as well. It seems to be somthing of a sleeping giant, huge,
with massive potential, but requiring a lot of work. No there's no hanger desk,
so if you want one, get building. The GMM Enterprise PE set is a must , as are
the additional aircraft sets from Tamiya, and the Decal sheets fromthe same
source, and I'd add in a couple of GMM Doors and Hatch sets as well .
Overall it seems to be a 6+month job to bring it to the standards it cries out
for, have a look at the URL's below, they might be useful

PS I have a destiny to build this kit, the Enterprise was laid down on the day I
was born!
I'm interested in the level of detail as well.

detail is excellent but as always enhanced by the supurb detail set
provided by GMM. Anger interior need to be stratchbuilt although is
easy enough using sheet styrene, plastrut and brass tubing.
To "add" to the model i used the tamiya extra aircraft ets and uses the
decals provided again by GMM.

The D&S booki will be of great help to you when you build this beast. Good
luck!

I first shied away from this kit 'cuz I couldn't swallow the
price: but always seeing it sitting there on the shelf at
the hobby shop did its work and I gave in.
I've been working on mine for about nine months now (in
between four other kits), and am probably 50% complete. I
added the GMM set and three additional aircraft kits, for a
full complement of planes.
The GMM set is a MUST, but not due to any deficiencies in
the base kit - it just adds immensely to the overall
picture. There is no hangar deck, and there is no island
interior. HOWEVER, it is quite simple to add a very
believable hangar, and I've only just started on the
island. Opening hatches and adding passageways behind them,
that sort of thing.
I give this kit a 9 out of 10 for the following reasons:
IT IS A MONSTER, but this is not what makes the kit great.
After you get over the initial impact of the size, and start
looking at details, everywhere you look is impressive. The
moldings are crisp, and everything 'looks' right.
Everything fits well.
So far, my wife is impressed enough that she says it can
stay out in the open.
The reasons I can't give it a 10:
For the money, it should have a hangar deck.
There are a zillion life rafts to paint :)
There are two zillion aircraft tie-downs to paint :)))
Search the web for pics if you haven't already, there are
many exquisite examples of this kit: let me know if you
can't find them...
