Acrylic paint drying too fast.

Are there any additives that I can use to prevent acrylic paint from
drying before I get the brush out of the container?

I am finding that before I can get the brush onto the surface I want to
paint, sometimes even just out of the jar, the paint has just about
dried out.

You're kidding right? What brand? Go to your local art supply store and ask for
"acrylic extender."

Tamiya - at least this batch is better than the last I got, it was all
lumpy and required large amounts of thinner.

I've foiund Tamiya absolutely vile for brush painting, for exactly the
reason you note. About the only thing I'll do now that way are prop tips
or maybe really tiny touch-ups. Tamiya probably dries so fast because
most of the carrier is some alcohol, like isopropyl, so thinning with a
mix of isopropyl and distilled water would probably retard the drying
enough for you to get in a few brush strokes. Otherwise, put the stuff
in an airbrush and find something else for the hand brushes.

Just for grins I put a few drops of dish soap in a bottle, then paint, and in a
seperate bottle Future and paint. They both appeared to work well enough as
retarders. I've gone to regular art stores, Michaels and HL's, but no one
seems to have the particular types mentioned here awhile back. The yahoos at
HL and Michaels didn't even know what I was talking about.

Michaels is the WORST for people actually knowing anything about arts
and craft items. More times than not I've walked out of there
completely frustrated because no one could answer a simple question or
show me where an item is.

2-5% of liquid honey or glycerin.

Well since the Michaels in my area has people bussed in from a group home/adult
day care to stock shelves (I seen 'em) I guess it's no wonder they aren't much
help...
And since their paint stock and model selection is almost non existant,I've
only been using them for endless supplies of Testors Corsairs ($6 with 40% off
coupon)as paint guinea pigs...

I meant to say,$6 BEFORE the coupon,of course! And I admit even then that's too
much for what you get ;-)

Here's one popular brand, I'm sure there's others:
