Does anybody know if the upper wing surfaces were ever painted a darker grey?
Does anybody have pictures of the 1988 Tiger Meet RAF F-4J's?
Thanks,
Darren McTee
Im sure it was some of these planes that were painted the wrong colour by
the yanks cos they couldnt read the painting instuctions, but in real light
the colour looks differant

and work your way from there
The F-4J were delivered to 74(F) Squadron in the Standard Air Defence scheme
of the day, painted in what has been described as "Approximations" of the
British Standard Paint scheme colours. The two FS Colours you quote are the
correct colours for the upper surfaces of the wings and were deemed the
closest match to BS 637 and BS 626 respectively.
The Hasegawa instructions are not of

The Inboard section of the wing was painted FS 36270 and the Outer wing
(Outboard of the wing fold) was FS 36314, the same as the Fuselage.
I have checked my copy of the WARPAINT on the UK Phantoms and these are the
references it quotes as well.
As a postscript, I worked on Phantoms in the late Eighties on 43(f) Squadron
and I always had a hard time seeing the difference between the upper wing
colours( The Aircraft were finnished in the standard British Standard
scheme)- I don't recall ever seeing as stark a contrast as some of the
models I've seen built, but maybe the overall weathering of the aircraft
(most had been around for about 5 years in the grey scheme) toned down the
contrast between the greys. But the 74 sqn birds looked great with the black
fin and that distinctive "grey" (More like green/blue on a sunny day)
there's my two cents...

IIRC the F-4J(UK)'s were initially delivered in an equivalent scheme to that
in use on FG1/FGR2's but as they were painted in the US by US Navy workshops
they used FS standard equivalents to the BS colours normally used. As they
were also applied over a yellow zinc chromate primer this resulted in some
strange variations in appearance depending on the prevailing light/weather
conditions.
I think the following is correct :
Light Aircraft Grey undersurfaces (US equiv.Light Gull Grey FS 26440)
Barley Grey fuselage upper surface & outer wing panels (Us equiv. Flint Grey
FS ?????)
Medium sea grey upper inner wing panels (US equiv. Neutral Grey FS 26270)
The original RAF scheme was satin finish but this turned matt fairly
quickly.
Just to confuse things the F-4J's were also repainted in standard RAF
colours as they underwent overhaul.
I cant say the above is definitive but I'm sure somebody else here can add
more.
Hope this helps

fitting as for most of her career she was "Alpha Foxtrot" on 43(F) sqn,
Tremblers only got her when we went to the Tornado. (I did see a two foot
tall day-glo Cockerel on a Nimrod once though.......)
