Is there any good aircraft model shop in Budapest? And aviation (WWII,
modern) related bookshop too? I need info pretty quick because I am
flying there in less than 36 hours! Thank you very much!

When I lived in Budapest, I frequented a store in the V. district, near Vaci
utca called "Sas Militaria." If I remember right it was right at the south end
of Sas utca.

Also in the V. district (just a few blocks northeast), there is MegaModell on
Bajcsy Zsilinszky. It is across the street from Podmaniczky Frigyes Ter.

I also remeber a store on the Buda side of the river located on Moricz Zsigmind
korter (in the XI district just a couple stops south of the castle). You will
just have to get there and then wander around (no pun intended for you
Hungarian speakers), but I think it was on the opposite side of the korter from
McDonalds.

Hope they are still open, it has been a while.

Have fun in Pest!

I have just moved to Budapest and have started to hunt down the model shops!

So far I have found:

Sas Militaria is still there. It is the best "enthusiast" shop I have
found. They sell Aires detail sets, Eduard etc as well as a selection of
kits, paints etc. They also have a selection of Squadron books and a few
Hungarian books and they publish a Hungarian Model Magazine called "Pro
Modell", pick one up for model shop adds. It is a counter style shop so you
have to ask for stuff but they seem to hold a good stock, Aires stuff for
instance. They also have a model museum on the same street which could be
worth a look.

MegaModell is 10 minutes walk away. It is a more conventional shop with a
large stock of Tamiya, Hasegawa, Italeri, Revell etc but little of the
specialist stuff although they have some on display.

Both of these shops are close to the Deak Ferenc Ter subway. This is at the
intersection of Budapest's three Metro lines.

Don't know about the shop in Moricz Zsigmind. It is advertised on the web at
www.replica.hu I have been to the Replica shop at the Mamut II shopping
centre (close to Moskva Ter Metro). It is a large toy shop with a good size
model section in the back. It has some superdetail stuff on display but I
did not ask if they sold it. If you go looking for it look for the bowling
alley. It is on the floor above.

I see you are from Croatia. Any tips on shops in your country would be
appreciated.

Good luck and enjoy Budapest.

Terry

I can't help with model shops - I went to one but I can't remember exactly
where. I think it was on the street leading from the centre down to the
national monument, but my memory is fading..........

If you do get a chance though, check out the Transport Museum. Again memory
fades, but they do have a Mil-1 helicopter with medevac side panniers (see
halfway down :- http://www.flankerman.fsnet.co.uk/mi-1.htm ) - and a rare
Junkers F-13 (I think !).

Photography is difficult as the lighting is not up to much, but it is
interesting.

Another place to get to - if you have the time and transport, is the
airfield at Budaors - a few miles outside Budapest. It was used during WWII
and has a MiG-21 F-13 on display (fourth photo down at :-
http://www.lindenhillimports.com/mig-21f.htm ).

Also some An-2's - including a beautifully painted 'Air Church' example. My
photos of the restored Po-2 were taken there :-

Have a great visit !

Terry and CJ have named the most important shops, worth visiting so I'll add
some
details concerning bookshops:

- definitely go to the Museum of Hungarian Army in the Budai Var (Buda
Castle) district, small bus-shuttles go up to the castle from the Moszkva
Ter, get off on the second stop after the bus enters the castle, the museum
will be the large yellow building along the place, but the entrance is from
the side along the castle walls. The shop is in the first floor - large
offer of Hungarian military books, even such that are sold out (like Punka's
Messzer book). Besides, the museum itself is also worth a visit :)))

- I've found a Technical library with a relatively interesting offer of
military books - when going down the street from the Gellert Hotel towards
the Moricz Zsigmond Korter, about 300-400 meters on the right is the
technical library. As far as I remember it is the first shelf on the left
from the entrance :))) They also have probably all back-issues of the
Hungarian Military Historical-Technical Magazine, most interesting.

Grzegorz Gembala

It depended on what brand. Italeri and Academy kits were priced very
competitively (compared with US prices), Tamiya seemed a little cheaper than
the US. Actually Tesco often stocked a pretty good Academy selection as well
for very cheap. I got a 1/48 Academy Su-27 Flanker for about $22 and then I
got all my VAT back as well, so it was about $17. I think the dollar is
stonger now in relation to the Forint than when I was there, so if you are
talking in relation to US prices, I found Hungarian shops to have excellent
prices. Don't expect to find Monogram, etc kits however in great abundance.

If you really want a model shopping field day however, spend a day model
shopping in Prague. I think I purchased about 45 kits when I was in Prague, at
dynamite prices in relation to the US.

The nicest part about model shopping in places like Budapest and Prague is
being in such fantastic cities to boot!

Best,
