Hi,

I'm looking for information on the Arado Ar240, specifically the AR240C-02
night fighter. I have found a profile in Scale Aircraft Modelling August
1991, but little else. This shows an aircraft of JG5 coded T5+MH, but
doesn't give any details.

There is also a picture of an Ar240A-0, also with JG5 in Warplanes of the
Luftwaffe by David Donald, which was flying reconnaissance missions.

Revell do a 1:72 kit, which claims the type was tested as a night fighter.
The decals with the kit are for an aircraft B0+RC, but again no details are
given.

Thanks in advance for any help

Shaun

I believe the Ar240 nightfighter profile in SAM was fictional; I don't
believe any of the C-02 types had the big ducted spinner of the A-O series.

The later Ar 240s and the Ar 440 are among the least documented of
Luftwaffe aircraft actually reputed to have flown. I have never seen a
photo of the Ar 440, for example (the only one so-captioned that I've
ever seen is actually a mis-captioned picture of the Ar 240V-1.) The
C-02 (this sequence would indicate the second pre-production C airframe,
so the type is C-0) was also the V-10 and is said by William Green to
have flown in the early summer of 1943. As such, it was the only
nightfighter example of the Ar 240 to fly. B0+RC is given as the code
for the V-10 in the Schiffer pub "Arado Ar 240", by Gerhard Lang
[Luftwaffe Profile Series #8, 1996]. Other codes listed there:

V-1 DD+Q1
V-2 DD+CE
V-3 KK+CD
V-5 GL+QA ?
V-6 GL+QB ?
A-0 [unknown werk-nummer] T5+YP
A-0 [unknown werk-nummer] T5+MH
A-0 240013 DI+CY
A-0 240014 DI+CZ
C-0 [unknown werk-nummer] T9+GL

As to this last one, there is no documentation that the other C
prototypes (V-9, -11, -12, -13, -14, -15) ever flew, which may mean that
the V-10 was the only C version to fly. In that case, it stands to
reason that it may have carried both B0+RC and T9+GL. I have photos only
with the latter codes, but this aircraft has no radar and is listed as
being used for recon missions in 1944. Alternatively, T9+GL may really
be an Ar 440 prototype, since the photo aspects do not preclude it.
However, I think it's an Ar 240C.

Mark,

do you still have the photos you mentioned? If you do, could you email
direct to me please. Only if it's not too difficult to get them.

It would be much appreciated.

Hi,

This is the info I've sorted out so far, but I cannot guarantee that all the
information is correct. There are several opinnions about some of this info.
( this list is not complete, but I'm working on it. Please feel free to make
corrections.)
