I'm looking to build a B-26 Marauder in 1/72 scale and would like to know
what the general consensus is on the available kits. I've done the Monogram
1/48 scale Marauder (which was a great kit), but what would be the best kit
to start with in 1/72?

I built the old Revell kit with the "goose-bump" rivets many moons ago
(won't do it again), and seem to remember the Airfix kit being somewhat
useable (it's been 12 years since I did one of those, too). So I was
wondering if there are any alternatives to these which are maybe more
accurate and/or more readily available.

So guys, what *is* the best 1/72 scale B-26 in your opinion these days?

Thanks,
CD

The Airfix kit (a late B-26) is an *excellent* model, especially
considering how old it is. For an early B-26 use the Monogram Snap-Tite
with some help from the Airfix detail parts. Scott Van Aken has a review of
the Monogram kit on his website, Modeling Madness, at
http://www.geocities.com/~scottvanaken/ .

I'd avoid the Revell kit if possible. At a minimum it needs a new
canopy, removal of the heavy rivet detail, and a lot of help in the
interior.

The old airfix kit is still probably the best. Matchbox did one, but the
Martin turret is too small, and, of course you know what the Revell offering is
all about. You might want to do a bit of kit bashing between the Matchbox and
Airfix kits, choosing the better parts of each. As I recall, the Airfix had
movable tail surfaces that implicitly look out of scale. I still think there's
quite a bit of life left in that kit, so have a go at it.

Actually,

The best 72nd Marauder is Monogram's snap-tite! The only catch is, it's
an early small tail, short wing bird. Good source of parts for one of
the other kits, though.

I would rank Airfix's Marauder tops with Monogram's snapper second,
Revell's third and Frog's dead last. I've never seen the Matchbox kit
so I can't give my opinion on it.

Bill - you'll note that I didn't even mention the Matchbox and Frog
kits in the same breath with the other three......... ;-)

For a late model B-26 the way to go is with the Airfix kit. For an early
model short wing B-26 the (only) way to go is the Monogram Snap-Tite kit.

Hi CD,

According to a 8 page 3 part article in APMA 4/97 (still available) by
Ley Renolds, Wally Carter, Dave's Muir & Clarke (first two parts were
reprinted from Mushroom Monthly). They say the Airfix kit is the one to
go with.

I built this kit as a kid & it seemed to go together well enough iirc,
but that's as far as personal knowledge goes ;-). Got thrown out a few
years ago before I got back into the hobby :-(((.

Regards,

Shane
