Interesting! Fellow r.m.s'ers Tom Hiett (thi...@iastate.edu) just got back
from the Chicago Historics and I (mad...@ix.netcom.com) just returned from
the Monterey Historics a couple weeks ago. We should compare notes.

>Scarab Mk1
>Lola T70 Coupe

You're in luck on these two, Gerry Chevalier's MiniExotics makes 1/24th
resin versions of both. (Be forewarned that the GT-70 Mk-III is pretty
expensive, it's very complex for a resin kit). Resin Repops, a company in
Colorado, also makes recasts of the old Strombecker Scarab.

Tamiya made a gorgeous 1/12 scale GT70 Mk III, they're very expensive
collectors items now!

Larry Greenberg (Scale Auto Enthusiast) tells me that Glencoe is in
posession of the tooling for the old Strombecker Scarab, no word on when or
if it's going to be out again. Fred Cady has always made decals for the
Scarab... in both RAI Lance Reventlow/Chuck Daigh trim, and as Augie Pabst's
"Meister Brauser". Herb Deeks makes a set of cast metal Hallibrand wheels
that are PERFECT for that car!

>Lola T 332, T163

Unless you are building in 1/43rd, you're outta luck here.

>Lotus 19

This was made as a 1/24th vac-form by John F. Johnson's Teapot Graphics,
dunno if it's still available. (It was acompanied by a C-type Jaguar, a
Maserati 300s, and a Maserari 151. )

If anyone knows about other kits (in other scales, too), I'd like to know
about them, also!

If building models of vintage racing cars really excites you, there is a
magazine! Michael Quartermann, in the SF Bay area, produces a little journal
called "Model Racing Replica News". it's fantastic for vintage racing fans!
Be forewarned that it's all black and white and that it doesn't come out on
schedule... mostly because it's a labor of love of Mike's, he's doing it
almost alone.

Also, there are quite a few vintage race car fans in r.m.s. Perhaps we can
get a mailing list started?

I just got a new catalog from MiniExotics last week. They now
offer a curbside version which can be tricked out to the full
version at a later time. The curbside is still, $90 I think.

A well traveled r.m.s. reader who is on vacation now and has
connections in the orient has heard this may be re-issued.
It will still be expensive.

Tamiya made 1/12 and 1/24 scale versions of this car. Rumor has it
that the 1/24 will be rereleased. Several versions available in 1/43.
Picolino made an 1/87 metal kit.

I'm not sure, but there should be one or more of these available in 1/43.

The Union and IMC kits show up from time to time at swap meets. Usual price
is about $50 a piece. I bought a Union version off a friend for $40 and a week
later another friend gave me an IMC kit for free! I gave the free one to
another friend.

There is a company in Florida who's name I forget (Pro something) that
makes some very good 1/43 resin Chaparrals. 2C, 2J, and I think a 2E or 2G.

I know that John is getting out of the model business (Wants to
start building again). He is quite willing to sell kits that he
still has in stock. I don't know about the Lotus, but if you
send him a SASE I'm sure that he will let you know if he has any
left. He has done a lot of interesting cars both as vac-forms
and resin kits. Most of the resin ones are out of production,
but you never can tell what he will find. I know he has some
bodies that he rejected initially (usually because of easily
filled air bubbles) that he is now willing to sell if someone
REALLY WANTS THE KIT BAD!

I have one of these cars. How much is "very expensive?".
Unfortunately I assembled this kit back when my modelling skills were
not that great. Plus my nephew got into it and did some dis-assembly
work for me. I saved it from the wrecking yard last year with the
intent of restoring it. All the parts are there, except for the headlight
covers (you know the complex compound curve clear covers - probably the
one part most difficult to reproduce!)

Oh well, now it sits on my "to do" shelf.

Does he plan to sell his tooling to someone that will carry on with
production? I'd really miss that C-type Jag, and the Ferrari 330TR-LM!

Both the Reventlow Scarab and Lola T70 are available as complete
resin kits in 1/24 scale from;

Mini-Exotics Models and Parts

Blaine, WA 98230 USA

or

Surrey, B.C. Canada
V3T 4P9

Phone (604) 583-8236
Fax (604) 585-4146

The scarab is curbside kit with no motor or frame or suspension. The
instructions tell you where to get the parts from a commercial kit. Kit
has
resin body and wheels, rubber tires, vacuform windshield, and photo-etch
knock off hubs. There are decals included for a couple of paint schemes.

The Lola T70 is a monster kit with completely detailed everything in
a true multi-media manner.

Contact Mini-Exotics for more details and pricing.

"Modelers" company of Japan makes a beautiful 1/24 Chap 2D. This a
curbside kit, but it has beautiful moldings, great tires, white metal
parts , easily equal to Gunze kits. Cost about $55.

A long, long time ago, IMC made a Lola T70 in John Mecom colours in
1/24th scale. It was part of the same series as their Chapparal 2E and
the Ford GT/GT-40/J-Car series... back in the daus when cars were cars

I am given to understand that the molds are actually the property of
Lindburgh, but when I spoke to the guy from their company a couple of
years ago at a meeting, he seemed to think they were still somewhere in
Japan. Union had gone belly-up and had not returned them to the U.S. I
also wonder if they have the Heller tooling for the 917 and 512 that they
released.

Yes... it was the USRRC/CanAm competitor, an open top sports-racer, and not
the T70 GT (a coupe... the FIA required in those days that a GT have 2
seats, a spare tire, room for luggage...) As mentioned before, a 1/12 kit
was released by Tamiya, which has been copied in half-size, in resin, by
MiniExotics.

The tooling for the Mecom T70 found its way into the hands of the Japanese
company Union (along with a lot of other IMC tooling), who re-released it.

... and the '67 LeMans winning GT40 MkIV. All but the J-car were re-released
by Union. Does anybody know where those tools are NOW? The 30th anniversary
of the MkII LeMans win is next year and the MkIV's is the year after that!

This would seem to make sense, since Lindberg has the tooling to the IMC
"Little Red Wagon" kit. However, the last releases of the Ford Sports
Prototypes was from Testors... in the "Those Famous Fords" series. (They
did the old IMC 48 Ford, too. I wonder where THAT went). From there the
tools passed from limbo on to Union.

>but when I spoke to the guy from their company a couple of

This is where the story gets VERY interesting. Union also had the tooling to
the old Heller Ferrari 330-P4 kit. This tool seems to have passed on to
LS... I've seen at least two kits in LS boxes.

>Union had gone belly-up and had not returned them to the U.S. I
>also wonder if they have the Heller tooling for the 917 and 512 that they

The 917K ("kurz" for "short", the "longtails" were designated "LH" for
"Langhecht") and 512S kits were also originally Heller kits. Then, they were
re-released by both Testors and Union (not sure who did it first...) I have
in my collection a fairly recent Protar kit of the Ferrari 512S, which is
unmistakably the old Heller tooling!

This leaves us with some incredibly interesting questions;
1: who has the tooling for all the old IMC Ford GTs and the 48 Ford?
2: Since Protar seems to have the 512S tool, do they also have the 917K
also, or is this still in the posession of Testors? (Does Tarquino Provini's
Protar indeed presently have the 512S tooling?)
3: Who's really got the 330-P4 right now? is it still LS?
4: What happened to the old Heller 907/908 longtail kits? (Last reissued by,
guess who, UNION!)

All of these are great kits of very historic race cars that ran at LeMans
and the FIA World Championship of Makes, and seem to be commanding higher
than reasonable prices in certain segments of the collector markets, which
iis making it hard for people who BUILD them to get the kits! Moreover, a
lot of variations could be introduced if someone could get all the tools.
(As a fr'instance, some Ferrari 512M's, 512S Coda Lunga, 412P, 330P3,
330P3/4, 330P4 spyders, 917LH, 910...

Perhaps Accurate Miniatures could be persuaded to hunt these tools down...

Keep in mind the common parentage- they are both RPM now. I keep hearing
little hints that the tooling is in their hands and about to be
re-issued-sure would like that !

Uh... no. (I think?)

I wrote to Testors (testo...@aol.com) about the Ford GT40 Mk. IV, and
another fellow posted to the AOL Scale Modelling Collector's board about the
'48 Ford. At that time, the online Testors representative wrote that they
were in posession of neither of these tools. Anyone know any better? (AMT
seems to have trouble keeping track of its tools, so I imagine it is a
common problem... especially since you need a forklift to move 'em around!)

So, still classified as "missing in action" are:
1. IMC Ford GT
2. IMC Ford GT-40 Mk II
3. IMC Ford J-car
4. IMC Ford GT40 Mk IV
5. Heller Ferrari 330-P4
6. Heller Porsche 907/908 LH
7. Heller Ferrari 512S
8. Heller Porsche 917K
9. IMC '48 Ford

Most of these kits were last re-released by the now-defunct Japanese company
Union. I have seen the 512s in a Protar box recently, and it wasn't long ago
that Testors did this and the 917K...

Union last had the Heller tools for the McLaren M6a, Lotus 49 and Brabham
BT33 Formula One cars from the Sixties, too.

I put Scott Hards on distribution, maybe he can find something out. (BTW,
Scott, how about running a list of Japanese car kits that are hard to find
in the States? Thanks!)

Based on the current popularity of vintage racing, I think these could be
hits in limited production. (But, I have to admit I'm rather biased on this
subject!)
