What is your favorite single staged rocket? And favorite D powered. Mine
would be the Estes Aerobee 300 and the Estes Sandhawk.

A scratchbuilt canard-configuration boost-glider that flew on Estes A
mini-motors (and was last seen heading East from Alamogordo years
ago... it had always had a very nice gentle turn until that
flight...).

'stock' single-staged:

Mars Lander (if counting cool, advanced build models)
original Estes (I think?) Mercury Redstone (if counting skill level 5
with oodles of pieces for each fin and dowel-built escape tower)
Streak ('cuz it was my first rocket)
Sprint ('cuz it was the first boat-tail I actually did right)
Nighthawk (if counting boost gliders)
Original Estes Saturn V (if counting clusters)
Camroc (if counting cool cameras and only launching the top stage of a
two-stage rocket)

D-powered:

later Saturn V
Cherokee-D
and I'll join you with the honorable mention for the Sandhawk, however,
mine crashed or was lost (don't remember which) on its maiden flight

The Estes Goblin is my favorite, single stage and D powered. It was my
first rocket and I can still remember launching it for the first time,
29 years ago.
It had a C6-5 with a lot of maskingtape wound around it to make it fit
in the rocket.

Centuri Orion modifed to have a 24mm mount for both.

That was an awsome kit I had one when younger and found it a challenge to
build but it was a great rocket on C6-3's used a C6-5 only once. It nosed
over and the extra seconds we all thought it was a gonner. Thanks for
reminding me. Another one I need to clone.

Fat Boy built w/a 24mm mount. I don't think I've ever built a stock
one. Even the one I built w/an 18mm mount was modified to work as a
second stage. The other rocket I'd like to have back to re-build as a
24mm is the Centauri Space Shuttle. Even on a single 18mm engine I
somehow lost *both* gliders. Yet one more reason to have bright foil
stickers and fluorescent paint somewhere on the rocket. The Omega was
a hoot too...

I think Semroc has a clone of the Space Shuttle available.

I must admit, I can't recall much of my rocketry from my childhood
days. (Except that my friends and I were Centuri snobs, and looked
down our noses at Estes stuff. Now that I think about it, I'm
aclueistic as to why.) But, I do recall my BAR days when my son got
me back got into it (even *that* was over 10 years ago!), and today
with my grandson.

One of my favorite single staged rockets has to be the SkyWinder. I
even flew it on D-powered Aerotek 18mm reloadables. Had several,
because I still haven't successfully stopped the Aerotek ejection
charge from doing damage to that rocket. :) (Most of the time, it
simply blew the nose cone right off! :)

One of my favorite 24mm rockets was the Maniac. My son and I had a
couple of those - each flew a couple times - each were eventually
lost. Easy build for kids to get into. The Maniac is OOP, but the
Eliminator is the same thing, and our current fleet has one. I'm
currently building the two-stage, 24mm CC Express right now - I've
modified the upper stage to accommodate either D or E motors. Both
the Executioner and the 2x24mm clustered 36-D Squared are on my want
list.

The idea of a minimum diameter 2 stage using a D booster to an E upper
stage like Roger Coppock mentioned in the "best staged rocket?"
discussion sounds excellent! I'm going to have to follow your lead,
Roger! :)

The Centuri Snobs in my home town and a few of us Estes Snobs were always
arguing over which was was best. The enerjets were neat and always wanted
to try them but could never seem to get any in hand. I had a few Centuri
kits, Orion, Black Widow, Marauder, and the Israeli Mirage which was lost
on first flight as it was run over by a golf cart. I like the Estes kits
beter myself but they were what I was used to also. I guess it all depends
on what you started with.

It's gotta be the Custom Oasis for me. It's basically an upscaled
D-Region Tomahawk with a D motor. Aside from earning the name "Don't Eat
that Snow" from an unfortunate choice in color, it's been the perfect
rocket. It's a great flier, fun to watch, and totally reliable.

My favorite was the Estes A-20 Demon which has been out of production for
quite some time now. It had a unique nose cone and a cool foil pattern for
the payload section. It was also my first D powered rocket way back when,
so that probably has something to do with it being my favorite.
