I just recently moved to the Jacksonville, Florida and need a bit of
help finding a suitable place to launch Large Model & High-Power
Rockets. There doesn't seem to be any clubs in the area, so I need
any help I can get. Thanks in advance.

Brent,

We're (LC.39) just up the road two hours (into S. GA -- just the other
side (from you) of Waycross at Douglas (area)). There's over a dozen
high power enthusiasts there in JAX -- and Carl (Gus) Thayer kind of
heads up that crowd -- don't have a tele number handy -- but you may can
find him. As I understand, he lives in the 'mid-town' area (???).
There should be some hobby shops in the area that could help, as I know
of at least one that Gus got to carry the 'Easy Access' stuff -- up to
38mm -- which should tell you which shop would know Gus (just ask for
AeroTech high power Easy Access rocket products -- if they carry it,
that's your 'shop' <g>).

Some of this has spread to St. Augustine and found a few 'converts'
there, too -- and, as I understand they have found some property to do
this down that way and it's 'in work' as we speak.

Gus and the 'crew' do typically come up here and fly with us nearly
every time -- fly from a grass farm -- about 1 mile x 2 miles - and
17,000 ceiling -- four times a year: last weekend in Jan, April, June
and October -- however, Jan is problematic this year and very well may
not happen (several conflicts). But APRIL is the 'spring-time' getting
out time and it's always very pretty here with lots of rockets flying.

The also fly up the road in Ft. Vally, GA (another two hours) monthly
(3rd weekend) -- and then over in Orangeburg, SC (probably close to 6
hours for you) on a monthly basis (2nd weekend).

Down south, there's a crew around Melbourne and then Ft. Lauderdale
area.

Try to track down Gus. He'll get you 'up to speed'.

And come fly with us in April -- easy 'day trip' from JAX. Give me a
FAX number (or address) and I'll shoot you off a map of the local area.

If you find a site, let me know too. I live about 45 minutes north of you in
Brunswick.

When I lived in Jacksonville I launched from Lakeside Elementary
School's field in Orange Park. We used to have a club there but that
was back in the mid-70's.

What part of town are you in? There is going to be a HOTSHOT launch a
couple hours north of you in about a month. You should come join us
Savannah rocketeers there. Heck, if you can find a large field in
Jax, let me know and I may drive down and join you in a launch or two.
After all, a trip to Jax is a good excuse to visit Bono's BBQ!

If the JAX guys could just convince the Navy that the unused Cecil Field
would make a great launch area, they would have the field of the South!

Check out the industrial park where AOL has their operation on Main Street
a few miles north of downtown. Where the old airport used to be.
